I don't mean a hood scoop - what about pulling air from the part in front of the windshield. That is the cowl, isn't it? Am I calling it the wrong thing?

You are calling it right. I think we discussed both in those topics.

Hypermax sells a cowl intake that connects to the stock air cleaner.

hypermax makes a unit that draws air from just above the brake booster, its very noisy without a turbo but it does work. with a turbo all you get is whistle. ive also noticed with mine that the filter doesnt get nearly as dirty as it does with the stock intake tube (15k+ and it still looks clean)

I have a turbo....

I emailed hypermax, so we'll see. Do you have any picturs of yours - I could not see it there. Do you cut holes in the wall? The hypermax site said you didn't have to, I can't see how that works...

wrong-
the cowl area is a high pressure zone. Its the same place that your vent and defroster air is drawn from. If it was low pressure, your cabin would not get fresh air.

Huff can probably get you one of those Hypermax items if you want it.

Is Huff a Hypermax dealer?

They sent a pic, but I can't attach it, so let me know if you want it. It's really the same stuff on their website.
Here's what they told me:

The cowl comes with everything needed to install it. Comes with the hose,
just tell us it is a ford factory kit so we can get you the correct hose.
You just simply cut a hole in the firewall and screw the duct to it and
connect the hose. The duct is plastic as is the flexible hose.

Thanks
