Is finding a ZF5 out of an F-Superduty any easier? Cause it's actually a 4x4 transmission, only with a parking brake assembly bolted to it instead of a transfer case...

Well, tomorrow I am making a 200 mile round trip to a couple "truck" as in BIG truck salvage yards, and a couple small junk yards. I plan on NOT coming home until I either have a torque converter, or a complete ZF swap "kit".

I have 5 or 6 gallons of transmission fluid, a new filter, new pump seal, and pan gasket for my automatic...so if I get a conveter I am going to dive into that little project tomorrow night, but if not....5 speed it is!

Well, I made that round trip.....and came up with nothing to fit my E4OD.

Came up with a price of $1400 for a 5 speed from a 1996 F superduty PSD...That is trans, clutch pressure plate (dmf) pedals, slave, master and trans minus the Ebrake.

DOing a little digging, I kow the clutch gear won't work, so I might as well add in the price of buying a SMF clutch too..

back to the drawing board.

I think I am going to go 5 speed afterall.....I called Ford, and for a torque converter it is about $675 taxes in.

If I go ebay or a US dealer, I get dinged with import duty fees making it a bit more expensive.

THAT being said, if I did put a converter in this thing, and put the new filter and gaskets in her....will the transmission last?

If I spend the extra $$ now and buy that transmission (just the transmission, pedals, shifter and clutch master and slave) then I would only need a SMF clutch, (maybe driveshafts?) and I would have a MUCH tougher system in my books. I jsut love having a stickshift in my vehicles.

I'd go with the stickshift conversion then, seems like it's gonna cost ya about as much as E4OD and you want it anyways. And being a PSD trans it should have better ratios than the ZF5 that normally goes behind an IDI...

$675. For a stock converter. They need to stop drinking the bong water.

There are many aftermarket converters that are better built for that price.

Good chance the tranny will last for a bit longer if you changed out the converter.

Don't wait for the converter to totally roast. Then you will be doing a rebuild.

I have said it a MILLION times on here...and people think I am nuts. But prices around here for parts and pieces are just insane. People have something and they think it's worth a fortune....kinda like the guy with the 5 speed I am almost positive I am buying...$1400 seems a little steep....but try and find another in a pinch!

I paid about that much for my 3 clutch billet converter a while ago. With tax it came to $730 and it works like a hot damn. Bought if from an outfit in victoria, BC. 3 hour drive but I was going half way there anyway and picked it up without having to spend on shipping.

There should still be some transmission shops somewhere around there though????? Surely they can sell you one at a better price....

It's not like you are in the booneys out there or something! Halifax is a major city, no?

Also, you should still consider american suppliers because some are starting to charge the sales taxes on their end thus eliminating the reason for brokerage fees. Ask then if they can do this for you. My last order from rock auto was like that. Toyota wanted over $300 for an ABS sensor - Rock auto was $150 for the sensor, taxes, and shipping delivered to my door about 4 days later - HELL YEAH!!!!!!LOL
Since there is no need to calculate taxes at the border it seems it gets processed faster too.

I also agree the converter you have is ticking away and might eventually take the transmission with it.

If I was across the street, I'd rebuild if for you.

If your hell bent on putting a manual tranny in, I'd change the fluid and filter and dump a bottle of Lucas Tranny Additive in it and run it til it dies. I'm not real big on the magic additives, but I did nurse a failing power steering pump and gearbox with the Lucas stuff for almost two years before I actually had to replace them. Check the magnet, I bet your tranny got hot and there's filings on it. You can further baby it by taking it out of overdrive on the hills and/or do the TC lock-up mod and manually unlock the TC on the hills.

The manual TC mod is something I was thinking about doing...I already got a spare switch on my dash that is just sitting there doing nothing.

I went out this morning and pulled the plug out of the TC (the fluid in that wasn't so hot looking), and am about to pull the pan and change the filter...and dump some new fluid back in. I have to run out with Vicki later, so I might pop for a bottle of Lucas and run her till she blows up! I can save for the 5 speed gear over the next month or so (if she holds out that long)

When she lets go, and I finally pull it...any parts you guys need y'all can have for shipping only. What am I going to do with it? E40d and ZF's don't share a whole lot in common lol.

Ok, I pulled the pan and filter....then cleaned myself off...I will NEVER DO THIS JOB MYSELF AGAIN WITHOUT A DRAIN PLUG!!!!

I filled the truck up (almost ALL of that 5 gallon jog I bought) and fired it up....let it run for a few seconds and dropped it in gear with the back end jacked up in the air on stands....it hooked up and seemed to be fine. So I let her down and took it for a run.

I took it easy until it warmed up and then began to get rougher and rougher on it.....no more shudder. I also put new fluid in the Tcase as well. I gotta change fliud in both diff's and I'll be happy....but I need gaskets for both (or grey sealant) first.

I know this is only a quick fix and most likely won't last more than a few months, but at least I can run her again.

I am saving for that 5 speed install....will my current driveshafts work or will I need to spring for new ones? I know my Tcase will bolt up, and I put new fluid in that too.

What about the crossmember? I am ging to start another threat when I get a price on just the trans, slave and master, pedals and crossmember from the scrap yard.

Thanks for all your guys' help again!! This site has never let me down yet.

Uh yeah! A big plastic tote is great for that, or a bath tub. :D Next time if ever, take the line off going to the trans cooler and put it in a five gallon bucket, fasten it down some way or it will flop out from pressure, start the engine and let the tranny pump it out, there will be very little left in the pan so you won't get too wet, only takes about 20-30 seconds, you ain't driving so it will be fine that way. fer sista.

For the diff's, use the copper RTV hi temp.No gaskets needed.

Just don't overfill the tranny, check when hot and in park. I always run a little down on the stick. 1/4" Overfill is a killer, it aerates the fluid and the pump don't like air. "Shudder"

As soon as border patrol sees me rolling up they will shut the flood gates!! I ain't got no criminal record, but my reputation should be enough to condem me!

I just can't believe the prices for some of these parts...it drives me insane.
