as a ford owner for most of my life, i picked up a 90 chevy 1/2 ton phantom dualie some odd years ago.
throughly disgusted with it....
wouldnt tow worth crap
resale value is down ye ole terlit.
i ended up trading it for a 700 dollar rifle.
if you have fab skills and just want a project, i would go another way.....
parts are really cheap. thats why everyone builds em'

Chevys can be done cheaper than fords. Keyword can. Some fords will be cheaper (depends a lot on what you start with, esp with ford), but overall Chevys make cheap power, fit in more places (their 'big' motors aren't that big externally), and because of this, have a ton of parts support. And on that last part not just talking bout engines.

But you know that. Should be a fun build with a TON of options for you to choose from. The availability of parts for basically whatever price you want to pay (and by that token performance level you can afford) takes a lot of the financial pressure away, which can make things even more fun, least in my eyes.

That is what I have heard. And since I have been pricing out parts, I am starting to see it to be true. I am looking forward to my first GM build.
