we need the bronco project done soon and the engine aint even in yet
i bolted the flywheel on but it seems to have a gap between it and the crank not much about 1/8 inch is this normal or should it be flush
flush is all ive ever seen but is this setup special?
also i cleaned the crank pretty well and it did slide on a bit m ore
i think if i overtorqued the bolts it would slide right on

thanks guys i appreiciate all the input you can give

flywheel should always be against the crank...but id be looking for a burr or some reason its not before id just start torquing down on the bolts

Back of the crank has a step shoulder about 1/8 inch that fits into a recessed bore in the flywheel and centers everything (with very little clearance). Flywheel fits flush against the crank in the bolt hole area. As freebird wrote, check for burs and dings.

Did you remove the auto trans spacer from the crank.... Sometimes its very hard to see the space on the crank. If the motor came from an automatic trans truck you may have missed it. Also the bolts are going all the way thru the crank flange into the oil pan side of the motor. You will bottome them out against the bearing chamfer... I did this when I tried to install my BTS E4OD trans. I had the wrong spacer on the crank. BTS fabricated the wrong thickness. So the 9 bolts went thru the crank and bottomed out on the bearing chamfer. The end thread was damaged.... I have a terrible time backing out several bolts with damaged threads. The crank threads were not damaged but the bolts were so I ground off the first thread and die nutted the threads... Saved a big mess but what a mess I had.... You need a certain length bolt for the standard and auto tran flywheels or flexplates...

Again I ask... Did you see or remove the crank spacer found on the end of the crank shaft..... If that still connected and you are trying to install the flywheel and pressure plate you wont have enought room in the bellhousing.... I see you hav found this out already.... The standard flywheel has to meet up very close to the bellhousing flange. The starter gear drive will be about 1/4 inch from it. I'll bet the flywheel gear is about 1 1/4 inch from the starter....

To illustrate what Gary is talking about....if you don't see this on the back of your motor, you still have the auto trans adapter installed. Remove it.
