Can't Separate T-Case from Tranny

I can't split the t-case from the tailshaft extension of my T-19. It was sealed with RTV and it's like it's friggen welded.

Any suggestions? I've tried hammering a chisel between the two halves, but I'm worried about making a mess out of the aluminium.

Torch maybe? Some kind of chemical perhaps?

no RTV on mine but I think a mallet may have coerced them a little. You may be able to, with some chocks in the right places, pry while only putting pressure on harder parts.

Thin chisel or perhaps even a knife. Hammer it in. No need to worry about damaging the aluminum, it has plenty of sealing surface and is pretty chunky in that area. Just dont forget to take a file and knock down any burs that might be sticking up afterwards.


If it is really stubborn, try some heat on the alignment pin area, (heat with propane or mapp, not oxy-acetalene.)

Are you sure you have all the bolts out and the drive shafts off. Just asking, as I know I've overlooked something simple like that before.

I've not had that kind of trouble before with RTV. It sounds really stuck. I'd use a piece of 2x4 on the case and hammer the on the 2x4. I'd be careful on the aluminum. It's just cast and if you're a little too aggressive, it or the aluminum tranny to t-case adaptor may break. If you have a come-a-long, you could wrap a belt chain around it and pull it off with the come-a-long.

There is an alignment dowl, and the drivetrain shaft itself. If you pull all the bolts out, it will just hang there because of those two items. To seperate them cleanly, you have to lift it up so that the lop-sided weight is removed. I'd be ultra-sure that you got all the bolts out. Aluminum does not respond well to much prying.
