can you replace the fuel tank pickup fitting with piece of hose?

Like everyone else, my tanks are 19 gallons but if I get 10-12 gallons out of them it is a lot. My truck sits high in the back and when the front tank gets low (but with 6-7 gallons of diesel still in it), fuel sloshes away from the pickup during braking and it sucks air and dies. Easy fix = keep the tanks topped off, but if I ran a 3' piece of hose to lay on the bottom of the tank pointed towards the front it would use all of the fuel. Besides picking up some sediment on the bottom of the tank why can't I do this? I run only name brand clean diesel with a good shot of stanadyne. Sometimes I tow a trailer long distance and getting only 22 gallons out of 38 gallon tanks seems like a waste and I am hesitant to spend $400 on a bed tank and cut up my bed and lines to install it under my bed cap. Is this a bad idea?
