Can one of you part's guys explain this?

I know I'm getting old and cranky, but....
Why is it that I can call a FORD dealer's parts counter and tell them I have the Ford parts illustration and I need a bolt that is listed as common hardware. I then give the Ford parts guy the Ford Part Number N802114-S2, ( AB-119-KA), and he says, "I need the year and model"
Why?

BTW, the part is a 9/16 bolt used to hold the rear springs to the shackle or eye, AND its no longer available. Plus its a grade 9.8, and all I can get is grade 8--so who is liable if it breaks?

Um, no. But then again I'm accounting, not parts and service!

I can't think of anybody in that area on our system, so it may just be a vendor specific deal. On our system you can look up by number. For our electronic parts catalog, however, you do need to select make, model and year to get to the part number search. (At least that is how I do it.) Maybe squirreltow will chime in with some insight.

I'll miss being able to call my dealer and just spout off numbers.

9.8 is a metric grade, you have a metric bolt. Either 14 or 15 mm. 9/16" is 14.2675mm (1" = 25.4mm)

Metric and SAE grades are not on the same scale. But you need a metric bolt anyways.

As far as the part numbers, I've NEVER been able to buy a bolt at Ford. They show them in the illustrations, but do not generally carry them. I believe they are basically for "reference only".

Most Furd stealerships sucks eggs when it comes to frame hardware. heavy truck stealerships stock them since they are a wear item on a big truck. bring your sample in with you and they should be able to get you taken care of.

Bought all mine at Black's Springs in Zanesville, Ohio. They will ship to anywhere as far as I know. They can and do make springs, shackles etc. and are about the nicest bunch of guys you ever want to deal with. I can get contact information for you if you (or anyone else) wants it.

By the way, my local Ford dealership is worthless. They can't find their butts with both hands. They hired one new guy that seemed to care, but he quit, couldn't take the abuse of the other aholes!!! Funny thing is, the same dealership owns a GMC/Cadillac and they are right beside each other and the parts girl :Sly at the GMC counter is one of the best you ever wanted to deal with, very good at getting you the right part the first time - The Ford Buttheads need to take notes! This is no way a slam on Ford, so don't go there, just a slam on my local stealership's parts people on the Ford counter.

I used 9/16 in the spring bushings and they fit good, the original bolts were worn about half way thru, front and rear springs, no wonder it wandered. Anyway I bought bolts long enough to get shoulder all the way thru the hangar, hard flat washers on each side and esna nuts,' crimped locknuts', and cut the excess off. Truck drives like new and is quiet.

reason for needing year is on those illistrations they only list part of the part number, the rest is in the footnotes for the page.
trust me I have lots of print out looking for different parts.

Pulled this from McMasters from a metric bolt

Class 10.9 is comparable to Grade 8. Made from high-strength steel. Strength class 10.9 marked on top of head. Rockwell hardness is C33-C39. Minimum tensile strength is 150,800 psi.

Class 8.8 is comparable to Grade 5. Class 8.8 marked on top of head for sizes M5 and up. Sizes up to and including M16 have a Rockwell hardness of C22-C32 and a minimum tensile strength of 116,000 psi; sizes larger than M16 have a Rockwell hardness of C23-C34 and a minimum tensile strength of 120,000 psi.

So I think Grade 8 will be fine

During my recent cab bushing replacement adventure (actually Ryan Eklund and I )we had to sawzall the the radaitor core support bolts because they fused to the bushing retainers. New bushing retainers from Ford were $42 each and I had to remove the bushing...just needed the metal part. New 4" M12 1.75 pitch bolts...unavailable from Ford. Gave the bolt to my buddy who is the parts manager at a local Chevy house. Low and behold it's the same bolt Chevy uses to mount the cab to the frame on the new trucks. Go figure.

Maybe thats why Ford is dumping a bunch of people and trying to find a company that can bail them out of their delema. They hired that guy from Boeing that was supposed to fix their problem, well maybe this is how he is doing it. Sounds like they (Ford) meeds to clean house in the parts Dept.
I bought a new 1965 Ford car new and took it back to have a small chip fixed in the tail light and the service manager raised the hood and told me because I didn't have a ford oilfilter on the car he was voiding my warranty and I said do it and I drove off and have never been back to Ford Sinse. I have bought my cars and trucks from Private party and have never got a bad deal. my best buy is my present 1990 F-250 that was purchased in Calif. by PO and then moved to NM so this truck has no rust what so ever and runs great. This truck won me the best kept vehicle award at the 2006 Raley, (THERE, TAKE THAT FMC)

After 1975 that has become a little bit harder for them to do. It may take a trip to court but the "Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act" forces them to prove the non Ford part caused a problem that would normally be covered by warranty. :draw

Of course I've never owned a vehicle with a warranty.
