My neighbor has a '82 6.2 diesel 1 ton. Somehow he managed to break off the corner of the block mounting flange for the starter. It has cracked off across the outside bolt hole and won't hold the starter still. Can this be fixed or his he F@&$ed? Anyone ever have this happened to them?

You can try to find a good welder that may be able to help. Cast iron is hard to weld though. Unfrtunatly your budy is probalble up the creek.

your buddy is S.O.L.
high mileage GM diesels are famous for this issue.
the kickback from the high compression when cranking is the result of loose starter mounting bolts.
time for a new or used block.
ford IDI's have a transmission adapter plate that breaks when this happens. trans has to be pulled when replacing the plate.

Thanks guys. That's what I thought. He his SOL. He doesn't want to pay to have it fixed right. Too cheap! Just needed to hear from others that have had this happen and what they did. Sorry to have to bring up bad experiences.
