Bonehead move of the week...

So I picked up a 94 na IDI 2wd srw manual F350 CC LB for $1900 from a wholesaler... PO wired the starter to a toggle switch with a red cover. Fired it up just fine and drove to Baskin Robbins.

I flipped the cover closed on the switch after it started, and it didn't move the switch enough to turn it off.

Deep fried the starter. Didn't hear it since this truck has dual straight pipes... thought I was hearing gear whine or clutch noises, first ZF5 truck.

I graciously accept my bonehead award, and encourage everyone to use momentary switches for starters.

I snatched one up just to have a spare. Can't pop the clutch to start an E4OD

I put a link up to those starters a while back too... I have another functional spare on hand. I plan to fix the ignition switch.

you earned a starter swap for sure. as far as the switch is concerned, thats on the bonehead PO.
i have had a push button on mine since i have done the 7.3 swap. i dont know anyone breain dead enough to wire the starter on a toggle.

Didn't help that the switch was at knee level, right below the steering wheel... I'll post up photps of the starter if there's any visible carnage.

Yeah, that's not too bright. There was a guy around here some time ago that wired his glow plugs to a toggle....

Coulda been better... found out I lined his pockets with $400 on the deal. If I was a wholesaler I'd be nabbing these things left and right for $1500.

How about garden hose to the heater core? Almost forgot that I saw that on the truck....

So you made a mistake because some ****** started you down the road of repairs. Well now you have a new starter and are much better off for it. No telling how shot the old starter was from cranking more long starts that necessary. No telling that the po was doing really. Nice price too for a running rig. BTW ice cream will fix everything...

I have a feeling you might be finding little surprises on this truck for a while. However if it starts, drives, steers and stops then it was a good deal still. My car had been previously wired for a amp and such. Whoever did it wired the constant power wire for the amp through a toggle switch on the center console. I gotta say I have not seen that before.

I agree with the above, had you installed the starter toggle switch then it would be your bonehead award, but that goes to the previous owner. You get an honorary mention for not swapping the toggle out right away (though I am sure there is a good though unmentioned reason that wasn't done).

Well the starter was a very new looking one, with a made in Japan sticker. I didn't get a chance to rip out the goofy old toggle, I was 160 miles from home. I did see a few extra under the dash that I'll be investigating.

You know, I bet it failed because the PO used Western Auto glow plugs, Sequoia Motor Oil, and Grand Auto batteries.

Bonehead? No, no, it was... a... stress test... yeah, that's it. Need to know how long a starter will run continuously before it self-destructs, right? And I'm sure you can salvage the solenoid... Research project, yeah....
