BODY LIFT = NEW CAB NOISE

[MIDNIGHT RIDER]

Just got the 3" body lift in my 1985 F-350 6.9 Turbo. Everything went pretty well and now I have tons of room around, above, and behind the engine.

My interior was always fairly quiet, But when I cranked the truck after the lift, the inside roars.

It is no louder outside than it ever was.

I can't see any exhaust leaks that I may have uncovered or caused.

It sounds more like the inside of an old 6V92 Detroit dump-truck now.

Does anyone have any ideas as to where I picked up all the noise??

It sounds like it is coming through the left floorboard, maybe the column.

possibly some of the insulation has now loosened up and is allowing the noise in? just a thought

The most noise comes up thru the tranny hump, get some adhesive type insulation and insulate underside of the hump, then pull yer rubber boots off the shifting lever and insulate inside there, they also sell some insulation that you can do the whole interior floor under the carpet or mat, this will help alot.

When I first got my turbo on, one of the pipes was rubbing the cab weld seem, and boy did that make a hell of a racket. Kinda made a guitar out of the cab.

Double check all your body mounts and make sure they aren't loose. Body lifts put tons of stress on the mounting points. If you had a bad mount before and then added a body lift, it could be a culprit.

I am greasy as a pig, but I found the source of the racket.

For some mysterious reason, known only to Ford, the firewall/transmission hump on the left side comes into contact with the engine when the cab is lifted.

Diligent use of two crowbars and a prise-pole relieved it a little, now it just tips.

The point of contact is the area where the floor, firewall, and hump all diverge.

It must be the stoutest part of the truck.

Maybe I can fit a jaws-of-life or somesuch up in there and give it a little squeeze.

1/4" would clear.

Thanks for the in-put and if someone will crawl under there and remedy the situation, I'll buy their lunch.

I dont know if it is feasable but you might could get a porta power in ther somehow and push on her just a little

If it will fit, a cheap scissor jack might do it.

This may help...

When installing my 3" ATS down pipe, EZ had the (wonderful? ) idea to use a small scissor jack. Rest the base on the trans and crank up to compress the lip. There does not seem to be any ill effects from doing this. Sure was easier than using a pry bar!
