Blue smoke and oil smell on start-up

My truck was last driven a week ago (not by me). I started it today and let it idle for a few minutes. Then my brother drove it six miles. It smoked from startup until he got it back home again. It stopped smoking when he got it back in the yard idling again. I don't remember it doing this before. Any ideas on why, and what if any damage I'm doing?

That was a couple hours ago. I just went out and started it again and there was no smoke or smell.

Other information:
- Oil pressure is normal at idle and highway speed
- Oil level is full, not overfull, and looks and smells like oil (not diesel)
- Edge is set on 1, low boost fueling on 5
- Truck has 45000km.

I have heard that there are 2 fairly common issues with the 3rd gen Dodges:
- injector problems
- valve guide issues

I would "guess" that you may have an issue with a valve guide. Unfortunately, I don't know how to check for this.

As you are probably aware, blue smoke is oil.

Killer,

I have a similar problem with my 600, and have since day one. If the weather is cool, below about 50°f. It normally takes a while before it runs smooth and stops smoking. I've had it into the shop and basically they said.. "that's normal".. they did the tsb on it but nothing changed.

Searches on this site and others like DTR, turned up not much but that's normal replies. It's kind of strange that it just started happening though..

I'd probably be inclinded to pull any after market stuff like the edge, if it keeps it up. But I don't know.. maybe someone with more knowledge could chime in.

It does seem like the dealers aren't too helpfull unless its throwing codes or lifeless.

on edit.

I probably wouldn't care much about it but I don't have the problem at all with the 03' SO. It cranks.. no smoke and runs smooth.. so I don't think its normal for the 600. I think its probably an injector.. but that's a guess.

Killer,

I would keep a very close eye on oil level, checking for any unusual consumption. Have you been experiencing any oil consumption since new?

btw Rick, I knew you could pitch in around here. ;Sweet

No, it's been good so far. I last changed the oil 700km ago. That was probably 5-6 weeks ago now. I think it was fine then, but I don't remember with absolute certainty. I haven't noticed any changes in the truck except for the smoke and smell yesterday. It didn't do it today. Tomorrow will be a 300km trip, so if it makes it through that I'll feel better about it.

The CEL hasn't come on, but it can throw codes and not set that light off, right? Can someone other than the dealer look at it? One, I don't want to drive the two hours to the dealer I bought it from if I don't have to, and two, I don't want to have to pull the Edge off because I'd have to remount the Attitude. And I'd have to find someone with a stock fuse panel cover so I don't have to peel the velcro off that too.

I'm not sure about 06 models but on my 4.5, you can also get your Instrument Codes by having the key OFF, push and HOLD the trip button, turn the key to the ON position. Cluster should take off moving everything around, when it comes back to normal it will read codes if it has any.

The above is the Instrument Cluster Test which is different then the ECM check. Maybe we can get an accurate procedure and list for each model year. Mine's not showing any codes using the Key on/off test... it just says "done".

The P codes or ECM trouble codes are done with the key off to on three times without starting. The trouble codes will display one at a time on the OD display followed by "done".

my guess would be a bad injector o-ring or cracked injector...both VERY common problems on the 600's.

and to say the dealers arent much help unless its throwing codes or lifeless is well, ungrateful. i worked for a chrysler dealer for a while...even though we didnt always find a problem...we looked. problem isnt the mechanics at the dealer. those guys would LOVE to spend all the time it took to figure out whats wrong. the problem is chryslers warranty pay. if we find nothing...we get 0 dollars....if it takes us 4 hours to track down a problem...we get whatever the pathetic time chrysler pays and 1.4 of the time spent on the vehicle. dont blame the mechanics...blame chryslers tight ass. if we got paid for hours on end to diagnose a problem...we would. but we have families to feed just like everyone else...and nobody works for free. i can tell you this much though. the techs look at the most common problems relating to a customer concern...if theirs nothing to be found...and no codes, your kind of stuck. to do the test for the cracked/leaking injector, you have to cap off each injector..1 at a time, and run the truck..see if it duplicates or erradicates the concern..each injector capping takes about .5 with an initial .8 to access the injectors and get all the special tools lined out and installed. thats 3.8hours...guess how much chrysler pays a tech to do this particular test......1.5 hours. and if the test finds nothing wrong..we get paid nothing. with that said
i say either cracked injector
leaking injector o-ring...or worse case scenario....stuck/fried rings. seen it more than a few times with plug-in performance enhancers on the 600 cummins.

I got "Done" on the key on/key off one. On the other one (hold trip button and turn key on) it flashed "C Code" and then "00 00". I don't think it said "Done", I think it just flashed back to the odometer.

I still haven't noticed a gain or loss on the dipstick. But I do now think I haven't been paying close enough attention to the tailpipe. I thought it had quit smoking, but I started the truck while standing outside it today and it smoked for maybe 15 seconds. I bet it's been doing it the whole time since the first time and I just haven't seen it.

Holtzer, if it's bad rings or an injector, what do I need to watch for? I know it's not going to heal itself, so how do I know if it's getting worse, and how soon I need to do something about it? Am I looking at something major, or something minor like a bit of a loss in power or mileage?

whats the mileage on the truck?
things to watch for.....

oooh, i just thought of something...i have replaced quite a few turbos on the new trucks....check your turbo whel for any excessive play. you could have a bad seal in the turbo, that only leaks over night...dripping just enough oil into the turbo to cause it to smoke. thats one scenario thats very possible.
otherwise, keep a close eye on the oil...if it starts to smell of fuel, you have a injector or ring problem. the biggest problem with cummins is they are loud...so, listening for "odd" noises such as spark knock from too much fuel or washed rings is useless. i would keep an eye on the oil, check the turbo for any signs of oil internally...other than that..run the hell out of it, if its still under warranty, let er eat.
