Hi everyone, I have a 1987 6.9L XLT with 160,000 on the clock. I took it up to the local Inspection station yesterday to get a new sticker and on the way back i was going along and it was slowing down and kept slowing down so i gave it fuel, to the floor and nothing (no downshift no nothing). The truck keeps slowing down and will crawl along at 10mph (floored). Got it home and have no idea where to start, replaced the fuel filter and pump. The truck will start and idle but it sounds rough and theres a bunch of smoke coming out the tailpipe just at idle. It revs up fine in neutral but with any load just doesnt have any power. Please help. Thanks, Drake

Check for an air restriction of some kind... Maybe the "inspecter left a rag in the intake snorkle or filter inlet. How dirty is the intake filter? When was the fuel filter changed?

no air restriction, The air filter was changed less than 3,000 miles ago and changed the fuel filter when i got back yesterday thinking that was clogged. Like i said there is a bunch of smoke just at idle. Is there a way to tell if its rich/lean like a gas engine? what fuel psi should this thing run at? and is there a second pump besides the mechanical piece? thanks again.

These trucks have a lift pump down under the vacuum pump and that pushes fuel to the filter, then the injection pump. Some owners like myself have removed the lift pump and installed an alectric lift pump just after the changeover valve under the truck. Now the fuel is filling the filter as soon as I hit the ignition switch. It makes for easier filter changes too.

So the pump that i replaced is a "lift pump" (pimes the system pretty much) and the actual pump is what is above the water pump right in front? Is there any test to see if that has gone bad, also i noticed that there is some sort of vacuum TPS in there, whats that control? does anyone know the volt that that should be reading? I dont think the transmission could be causeing this excessive smoke. When its it neutral you can rev it and the smoke increases with rpm. The tranny will go into 1, 2 and D and i would think that the 6.9 could get up to speed even if it was stuck in D or third.

You never said what color the smoke is. Black or White. You may have a head gasket going bad which would give you a bunch of white smoke. Black means too much fuel.

drake,
crazy question... have you tried switching tanks?
i mean, front tant to back, back to front.
I've had a pollack valve clog before. intake it'll clog like that and act like a dead lift pump. at worst it'll pull air and rev high.
a clogged return will generally run the truck for 1 minute and shut it down.

worth a try.

its blue really, i know that means oil but it was never really that bad and if say one ring went bad that wouldnt kill all my power. The exhaust doesnt smell "sweet" either. It smells heavy like a diesel. The oil is black/brown like normal and not milky at all.

I think your IP might be bad or you have an injector ******* fuel really bad.....How is the oil pressure? Is the engine making it's own oil like the fuel pressure from the IP could be going into the base?

Just out of curiosity, at the inspection station, did you let them behind the wheel while tests were being run, and if so , how bad did they rev the thing in neutral?

IP? sorry i dont know what that is short for. Oil pressure is reading fine (how much con you really rely on the stock gauges). Making its own oil? I havent had to work on this truck ever before, its been one of the most reliable vehicles i have (aside the oil consumption). The inspection is a safety inspection only. NC state doesnt require emissions at least in my county. Ive taken a few cars to this guy and he just checks lights, tie rod ends, etc. I dont think its a result of the inspection. Wow, i want to really thank you all for the responses. alot of sites dont have this much feedback.

before the injection pump (IP) is comdemned, we need a fuel pressure reading at the filter.
any 0-10 0-20 psi gauge will do. connect it to one of the ports on the fuel filter head. you should be getting 5-8 psi at idle.

and ok... you never worked on it:
quickie fuel description for mechanical diesel like 7.3idi
fuel from tank goes to a 6port pollack valve near the front of the forward port fuel tank. it is 6port because two are incoming from each tank, two are outgoing return lines to each tank, one line is incoming return line, one line is outgoing to fuel pump.
Lets follow the one to the fuel pump.
It goes up the port framerail, to the engine where it crosses over to the stbd side. there should be a metal line going forward, this connects to a 3/8 hose which runs to the manual lift pump.
These lift pumps are simple, an arm rides on a camshaft eccentric and pushes the fuel up to the filter. There is also a rubber diaghram that keeps the fuel on the fuel side and oil on the oil side. (The previous question of "are you making any oil" could have referred to this, as often the integrity of the seal is broken and fuel oil dilutes the lube oil.
ok than, fuel is incoming at the forward fitting on the filter housing. should be metal lines incoming and outgoing on the filter. On my truck I changed them over to rubber hose.... anyway on the filter head is three ports, on is a return to the #1 injector, one is a schrader valve like on a tire, this is meant for manually bleeding air out of the system. The third port is a vacuum/pressure doohicky which attaches to a wire. This will tell you on the dash lights when your filter is clogged.
On the filter base (bottom side) there is a wheel meant for draining fuel/water out of the filter, there should also be a small stud which has a wire attached to it to inform you of when there is water in the fuel.

ok, outgoing from the filter the metal line goes to the IP or injection pump. It serves a very important role. It controls everything fuel related. Fuel metering, injection start and finish, timing, governing, etc is all controlled by this lil metal box. You can adjust certain things like timing but that is beyond the scope of this manual, and you should consult a fuel injection professional. (sorry, I always wanted to write that).

Anyway, from the IP fuel goes to the injectors, where they (the injectors) are supposedly set at a pressure. At this pressure (controlled by a spring and shims) a seat lifts and injection begins/ends. Excess fuel goes back to the 6port valve previously mentioned.

without the appropriate amount of fuel pressure at the IP it will run very similiar to how yours is running. The IP can pull fuel, but it's not very good at it.... thus why we really need to check fuel pressure.

clear as mud?

Great, thats perfect. Thanks drew. I'll start with the fuel PSI at idle. Do you guys think its fuel related? I replaced the hoses in between the injectors awhile ago because the truck was hard starting and a local ford parts guy said thats what it was. They were all cracked and dry rotted. That lift pump is also new as of this past weekend. Someone has hacked this fuel system. I have a 100 gallon auxilary tank in the back and they added another 6 port pollak valve in front of the stock one. The pollak valve switches from the front to the rear tank and vise versa, correct? This has 4 wires cut and two wired in. If I dont have good psi im going straight to this hack job (i guess it was done before i got it). Thanks, again

Yes it most definatly sounds fuel related. That would be were I would start first. Could be something internal in the engine, but I would stick to the fuel system first cause its easier and cheaper LOL ;Sweet

But it sounds to me like its getting air in somewhere.
