ATS up pipe & oil leaks

The PO told me that The ATS turbo was put on my truck in 1992. It uses a Garrett turbo, any idea what model it is or how to tell? I have oil leaking up high and want to replace the o-rings on the mating surfaces to eliminate that possibility. What venue should I use to acquire these things? I would like to have them on hand before I start this project.

I also want to replace the manifold studs to get a better torque on the up pipes. Does anyone have the thread size and length? Part stores do not seem to even list these for the '94 turbo model. I was also thinking about going to a fine thread to get a better clamp on things. The 4psi of boost and sooty firewall are getting old. Thanks in advance for the help.

I hear you on the sooty firewall. I have a factory turbo that I put on my engine and it has leaked at the y collector to the up pipe since I put it on. I have the engine out now and I plan on having the two pieces welded together. As far as oil leak my valley pan had a baffle in it and I had to punch some holes in it because it wouldn't drain through the baffle fast enough. I got this advice from here and that worked great. Not sure if thats where your leak is coming from or not. There was an o-ring in between the turbo and the cast drain tube that goes to the valley pan. You might look on the ats website they have a complete breakdown of parts but don't know if it lists the size of o-ring.

Is it wastegated? I have a non-gated ATS and it's the same as a Garret T3/T4, I just rebuilt mine last weekend because it was leaking oil, these turbos are very easy to rebuild as well. I used the $80 ebay kit and it worked good for me.

I used that same ebay kit crazy4wdracer seemed to work pretty good. The hardest part is getting some of the rusty bolts apart.

Mine seems to seal just fine, i coated every exhuast part that had to seal to something with copper coat, i have seen 18psi twice

dyoung did you have the y collector seperated from the up pipe and reseal it with the copper coat? Mine was sealed from the factory on the other engine and I seperated it and put it on this engine and haven't had it sealed since.

No i didnt split the slip joint part i was afraid to because i knew it would never seal again,

Oh thats where mine is leaking. I wish I never would have seperated it. I guess I will go ahead with the plan of having it welded there then.

Try cleaning the connections, and applying some stove pipe cement before you permently weld them, let that be your last option

I've already taken it apart and tried some exhaust stuff made by walker for slip joints but it didn't work. I am just fed up with it leaking.

Like i said try some stove pipe cement, that stuff is some pretty bad A** stuff

I think my leaks are at the cross over pipe and my replacement nuts are stripping out on the old studs.

I have come across some stumbling blocks and made a bit of progress. I called ATS today to get the valley pan grommet and the two o rings for the turbo pedestal and they are out of them. The guy was nice to talk to despite not wanting to hear "Try us again after the new year." He said many people are still calling about IDI turbo support and the stuff will be available again. I guess its good to hear that the stuff isn't being discontinued.

I also found out that the exhaust studs are 7/16-14 thread and apparantly the store I went to doesn't like to stock them. I bought 6 grade 8 nuts and chased the studs I am currently using. The o rings were easy to match up and I had to get a piece of 7/8 hose to produce a makeshift grommet for the valley pan entrance. Good times.

Now I am taking the girlfriend's minivan to work and am in a wedding on Friday night( hope I can get my hands relatively clean). So I will have to wait untill Saturday to get back to this mess. I love my IDI but wish for the day that working on it is more of a project instead of a necessity.
