got the majority of it done.

two quesitons:
1. connecting the Y pipe to the turbo inlet, there is a small (9/16th?) nut holding what looks like a ground wire on the backside of the engine. It is right past (and below) the valve cover. I believe it goes through the intake manifold near the last cylinder This bolt is keeping me from getting the Y pipe installed.
Can I remove the bolt? or should I just keep trying to jam the pipe in there?

2. I'm not seeing how the stock trans dipstick will work now that the turbo is in place. ATS mentioned that thier dipstick is optional. Before I waste an hour trying to jam it in place, does anyone know if the stock dipstick will actually fit? I'm not afraid to bend/cut things to get it in place.

thanks
Drew

If it were this time next month, I'd probably know this stuff. Unfortunately, I can't say really about either, but I know the dipstick tube is an issue.

If the ground strap is connected to it, no prob, the bolt can be moved.
as far as the dipstick tube, I can't help you there. I have a ZF behind my motor. But what I can tell you is that its a very snug fit around the trans.

cool, I knew towcat would be helpful....
I took the bolt off, and it seems just as deep as the plate it was bolted into. I'll relocate the strap.
Dipstick tube I decided I'll jam it in there, if I need to get an 'ats tube' later so be it.

Long as it doesn't leak.

I considered doing a photo-install like many of mel's fine articles. I've done alot of them in my area of expertise (plant growing and propagating). But I figured auto-wise the pics would be
1. pic of drew swearing and kicking a truck
2. pic of drew happy something fit
3. pic of drew going nuts with a sawzall
4. pic of drew swearing and kicking a truck

thanks

dang, one last question and the work is complete.

the crossover pipe I obtained is obviously not the right one. (this happens when you never buy anything new).

I'm certain my muffler guy can handle building a new one, tho is it okay to drive with the crossover pipes not connected (18miles or so), basically they are just turned out away from the truck, the Y pipe and turbo are all hooked up, but obviously the turbo will not be functioning.

other than that it was suprisingly easy, only took maybe 5-6 hours of work (tho I'm a easily distracted, so it took two days). Only problems were not enough room to stuff all the pipes, and knocking loose some bolts that havn't moved in 16years.

thanks again

When my local shop did my turbo install, they just ordered the dipstick tube from Ford for a 94' truck. They said the ATS tube was not as good as the Ford one, And it looks very "factory"

personally, I wouldn't do something like that. Haven't done something like that before so I can't say what MAY happen. common sense says that is a really bad idea. here's the question. what is wrong with the crossover? too long or too short? or are the flanges not linning up? If this was mime, I'd cut the crossover and bolt it up to the flanges. the cut area would then be sealed up by a "band" type exhaust clamp. that way I can get it to the shop without even worrying too much over thermal issues.
BTW,
the suggestion on the stocker dipstick tube out of a '94 is a great idea. ;Sweet

yeah, thats kinda what I figured.
looks like they are both crossover peices from the passanger side, the driverside peice bends so soon it can't clear the engine/trans.

hmm, looks like I'll have to go find me another pipe.

thanks again

Maybe you could use some of that flex pipe to patch it together until you get it to the muffler shop?

man, I'm stupid sometimes.

I ended up taking the original exhaust crossover and cutting the driverside peice to fit onto the passenger side peice. (why didn't I think of that before?)
cheapo clamp and it'll get me there.

ohh and via the Ford dealer, the trans tube is only $16, tho they need to order it (be here monday). If KennyD is right and the ford version is better, thats a deal, considering ATS wanted like $65 for it.

times like this, I wish I didn't live 18miles from civilization :)

well, thanks everyone for your help.
runs really well, need to turn up the fuel a lil bit.
Hottest I got it on the test drive was 550degrees. mind you due to the therocoupler location it is probably 150 degrees warmer at the pistons.

Kenny, the ford part ended up not working for me. Chances are it has to do with you having a E40D and me having a c6. (not many factory C6 turbo'd 7.3's in '94)
so I'll have to order the ATS part in the near future.

new 3inch pipes, sure make the old girl sound strange compared to what it used to sound like. Sounds like I've got a radial engine under the hood at full load :p

thanks again
