Antifreeze Leak - Waterpump?

When I shut the truck off, a steady series of drips ( more like streams ) are coming from underneath. I looked under & the bottom pulley & belts are covered in AF. I can't see where its coming from though. I read the other waterpump thread & haven't seen any of the symptom mentioned. But the radiator was full two days ago & now I can seen the top of the cores thru the cap. I'll have to tug on the fan tommorrow. If it is the waterpump, anybody got instuctions on how to change one. Thanks

I will let you know how easy it is tomorrow (as long as the weather holds off long enough) From the looks of the pump, it looks like an easy job, just got to figgure out how to get the fan off the pump shaft
It looks like some of the brackets for the accesories have to get un-bolted. I suspect it's going to be one of those "you spend more time cleaning the block for the new one then you do taking the old one off and putting the new one on" kinda job.

I was over Mel's when he changed Landscapeman's pump. (Education at somebody elses expense). I know Mel gets beat up some times for his "buy only Ford parts", but there was a difference between the FoMoCo water pump and the "Gold Series" from a auto parts store. A difference that far exceeded the less than $20 price difference.

I own the fan clutch wrench set but I will not be back in Fallston for a while. Wish I knew on Saturday, I could have stopped by! We could arrange to meet somewhere if you want to borrow it.

I'll let the experts tell ya if the wrench is a must have. Made life easy and I saw one on flea-bay and grabbed it. I could run over at lunch tomorrow and drop it off if that would help.

"Do you really need the proper tool" - this is where I usually chime in, as I've made it a science to broach such tasks with stuff at hand only. Its part of the "your never shut down if you keep your head" approach to balancing maintainence and expenses :draw
In any case, there are a few ways to remove the viscous clutch from the water pump. Leave the belts and pulley bolts on to help keep the assembly from turning. Carefully guided blows from an air hammer against the hex flats of the reverse threaded clutch are one way. Another is to double wrench across some of the pulley bolts to keep the assembly from slipping, and then fit a very narrow pipe wrench across the flats with a pipe extension on it. I keep mine tight (without locktite though) but use either method with good success. Keep your bolts in order as you remove them, two top locations can thread clear through to hit the injector pump gear if the wrong length are put back in. Everything else is pretty much accademic. Lorne, thanks for the alternative methods, but I don't have a freakin wrench big enough to fit the nut behind the fan so I think I'm gonna have to get the wrench set after all.

What's the best way to remove the old gasket from the block after the waterpump has been removed

I just finished doing that to mine... I just used a plastic scraper to get most of it off, then polished it up a bit with some 440 grit sand paper, that cleaned 99% of it off.

Make damn sure the fan is tight when you put it back on because when we put mine back on it wasn't quite tight enough so when we turn the truck off it some how spun back off and knicked a tube in the rad

Any time you do water pump work or stuff on the front of the engine get some carboard or put something infront of the core to protect it. I know I was a tad pizzed but we were able to pinch the hole closed and added some Barsleak no leaks in 2 years.

Another thing to check when dissembling the water pump always look to see if any of the bolts you remove have sealer on them because you never know which ones go into the water jacket. I never taken a water pump off of a IDI so its what I would be looking for you don't want to put the pump back on and find out some of the bolts required thread sealer

Fan tight - Yep! The guy that I borrowed the fan wrench from, suggested when it was all back on, and the belts were tight, to give it a quick bang with a hammer, just to make sure it seats up good. He also suggested a little bit of lock-tight if I had some. I did and just dabbed a little bit on there.

It does not look like any of the bolts go into any water jackets, more like oil filled passages to me. All the bolts I pulled out look like they had been in oil most of their lives. None of them looked like they had any kind of thread sealer on them or anything like that.

The instructions that came with the pump should have shown the top center & bottom center two bolts as needing sealant on reassembly. Mine had sealant on them when they came out.

I just finished mine up & i can tell you I would starve as a mechanic. I'm pretty whipped from putting on the turbo this weekend, but it still shouldn't have taken me this long. I hate to say this Mel, but I went with an Xbrand pump. Ford said two days & IH out here was longer. I was supposed to go to work tonite & couldn't wait. I put them side by side & they look identical but I didn't see a ford stamp on the new one. It wasn't reman, it was new. My pump must have been changed before because the top center holes were the same depth on the housing. Anyway, I'll fire it up in the morning & see if it leaks. The kiddies wake up from a dead sleep when they here it come alive.
