IIRC all '87 trucks have the later style IP timing gear housing...I've seen engines that were definitely 6.9l's that had the later housing, so I'm not surprised by this.

Wow... A rust free crewcab for less that $2000.00.... Now thats a rig one could easily flip and make an easy grand on. Doing the head gaskets and oil cooler is no big thing really. What a clean looking truck too... Wish I had the room and the money to buy it up... I'll bet Darrin is looking closely at this one too...

Best way is head bolts an engine internals. As for just pointing at stuff the fuel/water filter head is for a 6.9.

Best way is probably to look at the serial number stamped into the block.

FWIW, this one has the 6.9 Fuel Filter head.

All 6.9 and 7.3 serial numbers will have either the 6.9 or the 7.3 numbers before the block stamped serial numbers. Usually one needs to scrape off lots of dirt to find them. They are on the drivers side of the injection pump gear cover right on top of the block....

I thought I read somewhere that the bolt size for the heads was different, too.
