Truck in question is a 1985 F-350 6.9 diesel.

Alternator is original equipment.

All I have is an alternator, fan, and pulley.

I think there should be a spacer/bushing behind the alternator fan as the fan touches the housing before bottoming.

I am also missing the nut that holds the pulley on.

I thought no big deal; just get a nut at the hardware store. I tried every SAE and communist-metric nut they had and none would fit.

Does anyone know the size nut I need??

Where, short of spending a day at the junk yard, am I gonna be able to find a nut and the spacer bushing??

drop by your local independant starter/alternator rebuilder. Chances are they will give you the nut and the spacer you need. iirc the fit on the nut is rather tight or you would be dealing with them coming loose.

I stopped by the alternator shop and we dug through box-fulls of nuts and the only one we found that would fit the shaft had the wrong threads.

The alternator is off a 6.9 and says Motorcraft made in USA.

The shaft is not shouldered; the threads are the same diameter as the shaft.

What is the "lester" numbe on your alt?
7058= field and stator wires are bolted to the back of the case.
7078= field and stator wires are plugged in to the side of the case.
the last choice is the one that has the volt reg on the the back of the alt and the batt wires on the side. this one I will convert out when I get a truck in for work, since they are well know to commit "flaming death" and burn an enitre truck to the ground.

one more thing....how about filling in your location so a potential parts source can be found or shipped to you reasonably?

It's a new Ford innovation to prevent fuel gelling. If the engine compartment catches fire, it will be too warm for the diesel to wax up! :rotflmao
