Air intake questions

I'm in the process of ditching the big aluminum banks airbox and going to an open element filter. I've bought the Donaldson filter that a lot of PSD guys prefer over the 6637 from NAPA. I've read pretty much every thread on here about adding an open element filter, and still have a question or two.

I'm wanting to put the filter right over the drivers side of the engine. Hopefully it won't be in the way when I ever get around to putting AC back in my truck (just have an idler pulley for now). I would prefer it to be further forward for more cool air, and would really love to enclose the filter and run a cowl induction, however for now I think I'm just going to put it over the drivers side valve cover. My main question is is it ok to use flexible "accordion" hose upstream of the air filter. I certainly don't want it to crack and leak dirt in. And if so, where can I get this stuff? I couldn't find it on Jegs, JCWhitney, or the place where I bought the filter.

Any help is appreciated.

i seen some guys build a schroud out of a 5 gallon bucket to block the heat, just an idea. lol


i belive you can buy just the black tube from hypermax that they sell with their cowl kits. but why make it flexable?

I need it to do a 90 degree bend and then bend up about 2", I'd really rather not have the air filter cocked at an angle. So I'm hoping to find some flexible 4" ID hose. I'll check out home depot.

I would try to find the proper type of pipe and good solid rubber boots.
Home depot isnt going to have anything heavy duty enough for that purpose.
You dont want to risk sucking crap into the engine through inferior parts.
Actually, I take some of that back. I've seen some guys use heavy duty pvc pipe for the straight sections but I would still try to find some heavy duty rubber boots for the bends.

Yeah, I couldn't remember the numbers. Fixed it.

I certainly don't want to risk my turbo or engine by using inferior parts. I've got a 4 foot section of 4" aluminum pipe here for the plumbing, but now that its here I'm thinking of going another direction. We shall see.

You cant beat the 6637, its a huge filter, restriction is low, and filtration is high because its paper

I'd recommend using something that you can secure in place somehow. If the filter is just laying on the engine it's about guaranteed to rub a hole in it. I had that happen to my filter just from it rubbing on the insulation over the fenderwell- and that was just from engine movement! It's bolted solid!

Idont think its possible to rub a hole in the 6637 its a paper filter with wire mes around it and the end caps are hard plastic, i just dont see it happening

Yep, I'm planning on using one or two of these:
http://store.airflo.com/m002119.html or just making my own version of the same thing. I want this thing to look professional, and also be easy to remove and work around, while still filtering well and not allowing water in.

Supposedly this filter is hydrophobic, which makes it much more water resistant than the paper 6637. Its a Donaldson B050811 by the way. Dimensionally the same as a 6637 except an inch shorter. I got it at the same place as the filter clamp above, for $32, which is cheaper than I can get the 6637 for.

It's easier than you think. I've had K&N's on other vehicles, which have mesh on the outside, and had them rub through as well.

if its literally resting on something like a bolt head/etc it'll rub through with the vibrations.... Take a look at how I installed my short ram air intake... its supported above everything, 4" pipe etc. I'll upgrade to the 6637 with a cover soon but the filter on there works fine

Eventually I'd like to upgrade to true cold-ram air. but I don't have the time or patience yet

Mine is laying on a flat steel plate, the 6637 is a pretty bad ass filter, i just dont see a hole going threw it but maybe im wrong

I can get the 6637 at napa for 55 with my discount

Or it can be got online for 35
