Air Cleaner?

Ok let just say, hypothetically, that a guy buys a truck a few weeks back and was getting ready to do an oil change, filter change, etc.

And lets just say that he goes to look at the air filter and discovers that there isn't one. At all. None. It goes to what looks like a half assed cold air intake but there is zero inside it. We can also assume he didn't really look at it because WHO THE HELL RUNS AN ENGINE WITHOUT AN AIR CLEANER?!??!

Ahem.

Anyways, it has a hose running to open air from the ATS turbo set up. Suggestions for a filter set up? Just toss a K&N on it? K&N is overhyped toss something else on it? Cover it with pantyhose? Leave it open 'cause IDI's just LOVE dust and road grit?

I actually have customers that don't believe in air filters.last guy said "it breathes the same air as I do". Ya whatever....paper for my cars. I don't like the ones that come with a wrap.it's too restrictive and cuts power and makes smoke

Ah. I'd be leary of that hose also. Just check it for cracks/holes.
If it's 4 inch, just get a 6637 filter to throw on it.

Yeah, I was looking at it thinking about getting something fabricated or finding something a bit more solid.

6637 takes up a bit of space. Be prepared to move stuff. I trust it over the K&N that let my turbo eat dirt though.

anything is better than nothing for an air filter but I realy like this 6637 , never had any luck with K/N filters unless they have been removed

K&N and spectre filters are garbage. Had a kn in my gmc pickup for 50k. Took it off to check out the throttle body and it was covered in a thick greasy dirt film that wasn't there with the stock filtration system. They don't filter well.

so why would banks sell their turbo kit with a K&N filter if there not that good. I still have the banks filter on my truck and will be cleaning it soon. I will have to look closer to see if any dirt got past it.

Because money talks and bs walks... Remember the Fram oil filter commercials.. Pay my now.. Or pay me later.... Its all commercialism. We are force fed information that is not really correct. Everybody buys whats popular because e are told to. Research and investigation buys the best bang for the buck. If no investigation is done... Buy what is popular on commercials.... I too used what Banks sold me for years... Till I found a local company named S&B of Ontario Ca. I showed them my Banks filter. Right off the guy told me it was a single ply. He told me their filter was a double ply and had more pleats. I ask him to redesign to a better fit and please make 2 of them. Even the Banks filter I had 2 of them. One to run on and one cleaned waiting clean in a bag. So a few weeks later I got called to come in and get my new filters. Got there asking what the charge was... Nothing if you give us your Banks filter...... WEll hell yeah.. The Banks filter really never did fit the turbo bell very well ans it had hardened over the years of use. So I was happy to give it up for a much better filter... This company has a great web site and a program where you can disign any filter you want them to make for you. I call that doing a good business.

they sell it with their turbo kit because they can mark it up more and make more money on it than a standard filter. its marketing.............. there is less restriction in them when they are new and that's all banks care's about , the NEW installation. it sells

Bingo! If you follow their maintenance K&N isn't totally horrid but the costs run up. If you're in a nice dusty environment like Bakersfield or out in the Mojave...

There was a company out quite some time ago that made a breathable micron filter that seemed to work well, was washable, and such but I don't recall the name or if it really worked well. Was pretty expensive as I remember.
