I have factory AC. In the pics on Rockauto they don't show that one part, the one that looks like a heater core. What is that, the accumulator?

My AC gear appears to be all original. And I have two small cans of R12.
Should I bring it to a shop and have them see what they can do with it?
Or should I be following this thread and plan on replacing the whole system?

Personally, I am willing to spend the money for a new, easily serviced, reliable ac system. If I had 2 12 oz cans of R12, I'd swap or sell them and change to a new R134. I think the chances of a 30+ year old R12 system working are very small.

Ok. Thanks.
How much $ do you think you'll be into your new system?
Is it a somewhat DIY job for a shadetree mechanic, other than charging it?

Go to harbor freight and get a vacuum pump and a set of gauges and you can charge it yourself also. You might want to go ahead and get some r134a, it's going higher and higher in price. I heard the EPA set down a limit on how much r134a they could manufacture this year, so the price is jumping up. Sounds familiar doesn't it?

David85- Went with Sanden for availability. Displacement per revolution is about 10%:less than the FS6. The Sanden pulley is 1" smaller. Higher compressor RPM makes up the difference.
Interesting. I was curious because the Sanden compressor was suggested for a retrofit on another one of my vehicles (not ford).

I have a HF vacuum pump and good quality ac gauges from previous projects
Not everything is installed and working yet. The work is something any shade tree me I can do with the correct tools(gauges and vacuum pump) I also have a Mig welder, so I will pressure test the system with Argon at 150psi after confirming it is vacuum tight. Overkill? Possibly, Am I enjoying the work, yes.
