Some months ago, Mel offered to time my truck. When I arrived, and we opened the hood, there was no sleeve to hold the probe. As a result, the timing meter could not be used.
Well, I just went to my "spare" engine, and removed the timing indicator. Its just held by 2 spot welds.
The question is, could I just lay it over the timing indicator that is already on my truck--the one that is missing the "sleeve." It would be offset to the front of the truck by the thickness of the metal, maybe 1/16". Would the timing meter work? Should I drill out the hole, making it true and round, after tacking the "new" plate over the existing one?
What do you think?

That will work fine. What you don't want to do is clock it around the mounting point. If its installed advanced or retarded then thats what the timing results will be and you may never know the true timing. Being thinker wont hurt a thing.
