I just bought my first diesel and don't know much about them. It's a 93 cc dually 7.3 idi factory turbo. It seems to run good but a good amount of white smoke when it's cold. The smoke doesn't smell like coolant and I have no coolant lose. When it warms up it has a ticking sound that speeds up with the rpms. I was told it has new injectors and ip. I can see the ip and can tell it looks new but I'm not sure about the injectors. i don't know what it should sound like or if the ticking sound is normal. I just don't want some costly repairs down the road if it could be fixed before it gets worse

use a stethoscope to track down where the ticking is coming from.

either injector or valve cover.

Ok thanks I'll start there. I'm new to diesels but worked on about everything else. My buddies think it sounds fine and it's just me. I might be cause I don't really know what it is supposed to sound like. I have never been around the idi engines. I just thought the idi would be a better first diesel due to being mechanical and the price of parts and I like the older body style trucks

I also found a fuel leak on the line going into the ip. If it is sucking air would it cause the engine to knock?

it would cause the engine to run rough.
knocking or ticking is either a rod issue, valve train issue, injector, or maybe timing.

i would change injectors and time the engine.
a good thing to do to any "new to you" rig.
if youre having issues.

I have new injectors and return lines already. I just haven't got them put in yet. I'm not sure if it's a knock or tick but it sounds kinda like an exhaust leak. I know it still has the original down pipe and a rigged up exhaust.
