I have a 92 f350 with the 7.3. My question isn't about the engine, but the starter.
Here's the problem: About half way through a start the starter just quit. The batteries have enough juice. I'm thinking that it is the solenoid. Are these the one with the separate or the built-in units?

The Starting relay is mounted on the passenger's fender. You will see heavy duty wires going to and from the solenoid.

Actually, I crawled underneath and looked, like I should have done in the first place. It's on the starter. The relay on the fender is for the glow plugs.

It has two. One on the firewall feeding the one on the starter.

Your glow plug relay is mounted on the engine.

I know this says 97, but your 92 is wired like this.

Gnathv is correct.

Take a jumper cable or a old screw driver and connect the two big posts on the starter soleniod on the fender well.(Expect some sparks.) If the starter works then test to see if you get voltage to the wire on the little post on the same soleniod with key in the start position. If the little post gets power and jumping the big posts turns the starter then, replace the soleniod on the fender.

If not the check the wiring to the soleniod on the starter. If it looks good pull and have the starter tested.

I brought it to my local mechanic. After about $500, I got a new starter and he fixed a loose wire on the other starter relay. He told me that my batteries are shot (2014), and that I should replace them. Any advice on good batteries for these beasts?

I have used Sears batteries, the good ones, in the past. I have no clue if they are still good ones to use. Get the pair of batteries at the same time so they will pull the load equally.

Thoughts

1) AAA will send someone out to replace them, I believe they come with a two year warranty.
2) Interstate Batteries.
3) Some like the Walmart batteries with the two year warranty.

I bought mine at Costco. They will be in the $100 range for each one. Group 65, 850 CCA, 42 month free replacement.
Replace both at the same time.
