84 6.9 is acting up need suggestions?

hay i have a 1984 6.9 lt diesel pickup 2WD and it started to want to die all the time so i turned the idle up. then it just now started to sputer and it smokes at an idle and when i stop and hold the brakes when it is in gear it it lunges and jurkes forword. please help have no idea whats wrong and don't want to pay big bill to take to a shop. if you need more detailes my email is [email protected].

I would start by changing the fuel filter, fill it up with atf or diesel kleen which ever is handy/ cheapest crank the engine and let run for about 30 seconds then shut it off for abot 2 hours or so, then fire it back up and go drive it like you stole it

Did you do as he suggested, and add a lubricity additive to the fuel filter when you changed it? The purpose of his suggestion is to immerse your pump internals in a lubricant. The problem you describe is typical of a pump that has varnish or sludge in it. If you do not regularly run a diesel fuel lubricity treatment, or performance additive, your going to have these kinds of problems. Do as was suggested, and overdose an additive such as Howes Diesel Treat, or Power Service.
