have you pulled the pushrods and inspected them for damage....if you have a collapsed lifter i would imagine you would see one of the pushrods mangled from being hammered

the only thing left would be to look deeper....which means motor comes out and heads come off. i had one that hammered like hell for 3,000 miles...still good power....still good mileage just was loud. when i pulled it and yanked the heads i had a broken ring and a sloppy #8 hole (wore to high heaven)

I wonder if a compression test would tell me if anything is up with the #5 cylinder. I used my infrared thermometer to get the temps of the top of the injectors and they all seemed about the same +/- 5 degrees except #5. That injector was 10-20 degrees hotter. So could that possibly mean I have a cracked or loose piston? Here is another video.

Wouldn't a knocking rod produce metal in the oil? Both engines I had wear out with rod bearing problems had metal in the oil.

Neither engine was an IDI.

^ yea he tried that,

a compression test may show a loss of pressure with a cracked piston
but wont really tell you whats up.

the best way to find out whats going on is to pull the head.

another option is to do a leak down test and find out where the air is going.
again, this just tells you where the leak is.

if it ends up being a wrist pin, wont really tell you anything unless a ring is gone.

this video pretty much 86's the idea of an exhaust leak.
and since youve replaced the lifters and pushrods, tells me that if it was a valve or a spring you would have seen a
beat up pushrod.

i vote for an engine swap. IMO the sound is a major one. gonna need to tear into the engine to find it.

Sounds like your referring to the #6 when you say #5. The cylinders are numbered 1-3-5-7 on passengers side, 2-4-6-8 on the drivers side. Always refer to drivers or pass side. Thanks for your service.
Check the temp of each exhaust port, might tell ya something. That cyl. injector with the higher temp could be a double copper washer or carboned up seat letting the combustion gasses leak upwards.

I thought that was just the firing order. And the exhaust temp did seem a bit higher than the others. And thank you :)

I would think since the injector was 10 to 20 degrees hotter, it was so wore out that the pintle was allowing combustion gasses to flow into the injector... While elevated exhaust ports would point to advanced timing...

I think your injector is popping way too early, thus knocking or in other words, detonation!!!

Buy a new one (20% chance it's bad too, unless from Agnem)...

That's what Occam's Razor says...
