could be a busted head in your tank, is it low on diesel?

Could be a loose wire on the injection pump jiggling around, but less likely.

You should write a signature showing us what you got... might help diagnostics

Actually I can't tell you whats wrong. Might have to answer some questions. Have you done any work on the engine or fuel system. If not what levels are the fuel tanks at. Have you checked the fuel filter for plugged or fuel flow. Have you jumpered the injection pump shut off switch directly to the battery.

Fuel delivery issues. I recently ran my truck VERY low on fuel, it was stumbling to make the station to refuel. Filled er up and all was dandy. The next day it started and high idled fine. Once it got warm it would die at every stop. Took me way off guard at first but I eventually concluded that the metering valve took on some crud and was sticking. I double dosed some fuel treatment and it was all but history by the next fill up.

I'm not saying you have the exact same issue but between this and the ideas listed above, I'd say you're on the hunt for the problem. It may seem irrelevant bit details can give context clues towards finding the problem so do be diligant in explaining the problem and all of the details that surround it.

I'd start with fuel filter myself. My 6.9 use to do that to me, it would run untill it sucked the filter dry then die. I had a bad batch of fuel and it kept doing this even after a new factory lift pump, two different electric pumps, a gear driven pump off the old A/C pulley (it was quite the aperatuis) and new fuel lines to the tank. I finally had enough of it and replaced everything from the injection pump to the fuel tank including the filter head and havent had a lick of trouble for the last 8k miles. But I'm sure your fuel wasnt as near as dirty as what i was putting in that tank.

Changed fuel filter, water seperator filter, fuel return line kit, olive seals between IP line and fuel filter. Which wire off of the IP do I jump direct to battery. Not sure on level of fuel in tank, gauge stopped working years ago. I am probably the four owner of the truck.Truck is not a daily driver. But when I what to haul something I use the F250.

Broken head in the tanks is the fuel suction line shower head broken off. Thats a common item and easy fix. If you don't want to fit it just keep the tanks no lower than 1/4 tank of fuel. When the suction heads breaks off the last 1/4 tank of fuel can't be sucked out. So add 7 gallons to be sure the fuel is high enough to be sucked out. Also check the filter head schrader valve when cranking the engine for air or fuel. You want to see nothing but fuel squirting out of that valve. The wire on the injection pump you want to remove and jumper that spade connector directly from the battery is the wide on top. Its the closest to the radiator. There are 2 wires on top. The back one is the electric internal advance. It has a smaller spade fitting so they can be mixed up if both are removed.

Junks,

If you want help here it yours for the asking. That being said, you need to help yourself as well as the experts by creating a signature that tell us: (1)the year, (2) model, (3)engine, (4)transmission, (5) mileage, as well as anything else that might affect performance like special additions or turbocharging details. To do all of this, please push the "settings" button at the top right of the page, then look for "edit signature" in the "my profile" section of the "My settings" box on the left hand side of the page. Enter all of your information and the forum gurus will be able to answer many questions only by your posting the problem.

In these old trucks, there are not many new problems, just new owners who don't have the combined experience the forum offers. Help us help you, put in a signature.

Mike you said it perfectly. the more information we have the better the answers will be. Sometimes its like getting a shot that you don't want. I have seen countless times where a person asking for help has left out some important information when asking for help. Things like I have never timed my engine or I have no idea how many miles are on the fuel system. Or I have been running waste vegetable oil and now my truck wont start but I do purge the wvo before a shutdown.. Many factors can play a big part of helping others find the reasons for issues. Information is always power. the more we have the more powerful we are

Thank you for the help. It does seem like the suction line broke off. The forward tank was filled above half and no problem with driving around town.

If you have the time and necessary things to do so, it would be easy to simply take the bed off and access the tank sumps like a gentleman. Clean the tanks out and replace the showerhead with a section of fuel rated line, 5/16 or 3/8. Cut an upside down "vee" in the hose so it won't suck to the bottom of the tank and prohibit fuel flow.

Just so you know, I'd love to have a rust free Cali truck to be doing these kind of repairs on. Good luck and keep us posted.
