We've been looking for a diesel to fit a few needs here on the farm.
basically run an irrigation pump and generate the occasional electricity.

I was looking at the slow speed listers that seem to be getting imported from India, and they look interesting. Tho for $2000+ and weighting 1k-2k lbs for a 6-12hp engine seems excessive.

so I was thinking I could probably pick up a 6.9 for $500-$1000 depending on condition and use it. I would guess it would probably make 30+ hp at 600rpm and weight a good bit less than the 'slow speed listers'.
Plus the obvious benefit of being able to rebuild it and stick it in my truck.

Obviously cooling would probably need to be upgraded, but otherwise could anyone suggest reasons not to do this?
things to look out for? etc etc

The engine would probably run at 600-800rpms for 100+ hours at a time.

thanks

That's an exact project I want to tackle someday. Probably after I get my biodiesel system up and running.

My concerns are what the fuel consumption rate is on an idling 6.9.

Keep us posted.

I'm curious about fuel consumption myself....

biodiesel is already being made on the farm. Luckily the only other person living on the farm owns a fried food joint down the road :) oil delivered to the door.

I'll keep my eyes open for a 6.9 or 7.3 around here and then might start experimenting. Hurricane season is around the corner and my greenhouses alone consume some power...

Luckily enough I found a 'home town' international diesel specialist who told me they've got a ton of parts for 6.9/7.3 engines that they don't sell. Seems locally everyone is driving PSD or Dodge's
town of 35,000 and I've only seen 4-5 IDI's, go figure.

At those low RPM's, I wouldn't think cooling will be an issue. Probably even the opposite. How to keep it hot enough.
