im putting together a 460 for my mini day jet boat.

i have a decent lower end, and 2 sets of heads.
pics & numbers below.

todays project was to tear down the 460,
its out of a 89 F350, EFI
lowerend looks ok as far as cast pistons go,
cylinder walls look ok besides the rear driverside cylinder (number 4 or 8, i forget)
it had some deposits on it from a popped headgasket.
honeable.

pistions are 020 over, and minimal ridge at the top of the rings (.005" eyeballed)

so i will be swapping cams and getting her going.

which set of heads are better?
will a performer 460 manifold fit on the EFI heads if thats the way to go??

other than that, i think shell run alright.
thoughts?

The EFI heads make good low end power. How hard do you plan on turning it?

EFI 460 heads only fit the efi intake manifold and exhaust manifolds. The EFI heads have raised ports and not the big dead space on the bottom side of the exhaust, they are probably a better head if you can figure out how to run them. Price motor sport does make intake adapters. Or make an adapter on the efi intake to the carb.

Here's a little extra advice. If you want more power for a little bit of money, look at replacing the timing chain and gears. I had a 429 years ago and needed to replace the timing chain. I ordered one, but the timing marks on the cam gear were different between my old chain and the new one. I tried every parts store in town. All of the 429's and 460's called for the same timing set. Finally I went to a machine shop that built race engines. They ended up using one gear for a 351c and the other one for a 390 to get matching timing marks. I do not remember which gear they used where, but it ran great afterwards. I think that the different cam timing was used for emission purposes. This also cut down on power.

i will be purchasing a cam kit, complete with valve springs.
this is a straight up 460, so the timing chain should be a mute point.

I believe I have a comp 268h cam in my bronco, it's technically a marine cam. With c8 heads and block, 30 over sealed power forged pistons, f4 double dimple rods, performer intake, roller rockers, 6 al box and a little valve work.
Let me tell ya, that thing will **** and git. Tons of torque out of the hole and an extremely flat torque curve. 35's and 4:10s with ladder bars will bark the tires if you really slam 3rd. Makes for a fun ride. Might swap it with my idi someday.

I can get those valves too. And DO NOT turn that bottom end over 5k, the rod bolts will leave. When you get ready to build an engine I have a nice low mile set of 429 truck rods with the football bolts that are a good upgrade.

the last one in this boat saw 6k all of the time, but had a nice scat rotating assembly.
and i didnt have newborns going out on it.

when i first got this boat, it was a buddys.
he had it built.
we went out one day after a carb swap, and the damn thing came alive!!!
well, we hit a wake, and popped out of the water, i didnt see a big deal with it because ive done that many many times!

little did i know, he took the 6k pill out of the MSD box, and stuffed a 7k pill.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABOOOOM!

dropped a pushrod down to the lower rotating assembly..
it was gnarly
he ended up giving me the boat lol

and i will never again run a hydraulic camshaft in a performance vehicle or vessel again lol
