Okay, well I just replaced the 1g with 3g. As a result, the ammeter does not read the same - very little movement. In return, the rattling and grinding noise is gone. The alternator charges well. On a side note, is there supposed to be any play on the 1g alternator without the pulley on it? Mine moves in and out about half to three quarters of an inch - maybe more.

yeah...just went out and checked again. I guess it is more like quarter to three eights of an inch. It still seemed excessive. Is that right?

On the topic of the 3G alternator...how would you wire it to bypass the external voltage regulator? I know there is a write-up somewhere but the forum search isn't pulling anything up for me.

My truck has a rebuilt 100amp 1G alternator that the PO installed and it works great...but I am curious to see how one of those 3G bad boys would do...
