To be clear, towcat, I do not run the VW TDI site, I'm just a member. The part you do have correct is the state of my front yard - littered with TDIs.

FordGuy100:
Your local go-to TDI specialist is a shop called Fix-Um Haus in Portland (fixumRich on tdiclub) or a guy that works out of his garage, Justin (oldpoopie on tdiclub). Both of these guys have been to my house working on TDIclub timing belt installation marathons, 15+ belts in a long weekend...

Did you notice if there was any front end damage? The bumper is not stock - well at least the trim isn't stock. The fancy chrome trim came on the GLI Jettas. It doesn't look like the rest of the side trim (maybe rear too) is also chromed. Many people change out the car all around for a different look, but I only see it on the front, that's why I'm suspicious.

Also, the headlights look too clear for being a 2004. Nobody makes the Jetta headlight lenses in glass, so most are sporting yellowed lenses unless recently polished or replaced. Also check for the AC and warning stickers on the black plastic trim around the hood latch too.

38MPG in a PD with automatic is just about par for the course. Spend the 5-10 minutes one time to remove the fuel vent instead of messing with pushing the button at each fill-up. It's a stupid simple mod that pays off well.

It sounds like you have a generic code reader, but the genuine ***-Com cable and software has MANY more useful features. It's a requirement if you want to do a timing belt change, but even if you hire that job out, the ***-Com is a nice tool with excellent resale value should you choose to leave the VW family.

Speaking of timing belts, yours is due at 100K miles. In addition to the ***-Com, you'll need tools from metalnerd.com You may want to pull the camshaft cover now and inspect it so you can order parts and replace at the same time as the timing belt job if needed.

PD camshafts have been known to cause problems. I'm not sure if anyone's narrowed down why this is the case. The club has largely ruled out oil as being the direct cause as there are many who have followed the requirement and still have issues. The leading culprit is just vendor/batch differences in camshafts. I believe the replacement camshafts are now of known quality. After replacement, many are running Mobil1 Turbo Diesel Truck oil.

Talk to Rich at Fix-Um Haus if you want a $300-$400 tune that'll spit out a 30-40% bump in power/cheesy grin output. :D

Good luck, have fun!

Never even noticed the front trim, will definatly have to take a look at that again. As far as the headlights are concerned, Mary can polish plastic lights like nobody's business, I believe she had spent 20 minutes on each of them before the picture was taken. Could be on the bumper though, considering that the lower passenger side screen that goes in the bumper is missing. Thats a cheapo part though. The rest of the car has that chrome trim on it, but I guess the bumper doesnt. Will look at it tonight when the car returns LOL.

Also, I will change my location, I'm actually out in Tyler Texas (two hours east of Dallas/Ft. Worth.

The codes were pulled at autozone as I dont have anything to do so. My friend has autoenginuity that works with his 7.3 PSD, but a VW version for it is somewhere around $250, which buys me *** COM. That is definatly something that will be bought.

In the next month the car will be getting the following:

Timing belt change
100K mile tranny maintainance
Front tires
Oil change
New filters.

I already ordered up filters, so an oil change should happen sometime thursday. Timing belt has to wait for a couple paychecks (I get paid one week, then Mary does the next, etc).

Its a used car, and for the price we got it at, I figure if it has some things wrong it was alright.

Definatly want to get it tuned, but thats down the road ;Sweet

Another fillup:

495.1 miles
12.4 gallons of fuel

Fuel mileage: 39.93mpg

I should say my commutes are roughly 30 miles round trip, of which 18-20miles are open highway, and the rest is in town driving (usually consisting of heavy traffic/frequent stops).

Hoping my upcoming trip to Galveston will net mid 40's. Criuse will be set at 65mph.

Are you completely running down the tank? You should be able to squeeze 15 gallons. 40 is prettygood for an auto. High speeds andthe AC don't help much for mpgs.

No, I plan to do a ventectomy as they call it. I fill up at the fuel light which has roughly been 12.5 gallons each time. I thought the tanks were only like 14.5 gallons (1.9 gallons after fuel light?). Anyways that should help. I am filling to the top as best as I can though.

Well headed on down to Galveston tommorow for the cruise. ~250 miles each way. Hopefully we can pull low to mid 40's out of it.

Also got some new tires for the front. Had bad vibration in the steering wheel before, none afterwards. Guess those tires were done for.

Well here it is.

Filled up in Brownsville Tx. Drove to Galveston, Tx. That was roughly 244 miles. Drove back a different way and filled up in Tyler Tx.

Miles: 501.5
Fuel used: 10.25 gallons

48.9mpg. And yes that was topped off.

Driving to and from cruise set at 65 mph. No A/C down, 85% A/C during drive back.

Not bad for a auto PD ;Sweet
