2 piece ATS downpipe?

I wonder if I could cut a chunk out of my ATS downpipe on my 088 setup, up near the top and weld a couple of these puppies in to make that sucker removable?

I won't be getting my truck back from the body shop for a couple more days so I can't get an eyeball on the thing to see if it looks doable. It sure would be nice to be able to just unbolt that pain in the neck instead of having to swing from it like a monkey trying to get it to break loose

well if you do it use stainless steel bolts and antiseize. then you'll never have a hard time getting it off.

This is the best idea I've seen yet. I might do this on mine since I'm driving around without a down pipe right now.
Or my thought would be weld the flange little lower & weld a small chunk of the pipe into the housing so the bolts would be easier to get to.

That's a neat looking coupler, but I wonder if I'd be able to access that horizontal bolt once I had the thing mounted in there high enough to do any good ( that is high enough to clear the tranny)

How much spread room do you need away from the pipe to get the clamp clear of it?

I had the same kind of idea than you and i might have found a solution for it...

I was browsing through the web and i found almost the same kind of coupler than typ4's one, but as you can see from the image, this coupler probably would slip into to the ATS turbo outlet, since you can get it in 3" also. With this coupler the turbo outlet setup would almost be like it was in the original outlet, so it would be very easy to take the exhaust off without a fight...

That coupler is from Martelius and i don't know if they have any resellers in the US. But if you have some machining skills and equipment that isn't very hard to do either.

kpj that's just two V-band flanges and clamps.

The "stack breakers" that airflo sells are really just simplified V-band setups.

You COULD put a V-band flange on the turbo elbow...problem there would be with welding the flange to the cast elbow.

Yep, i know they are just two flanges and a v-band, but what i thought is that maybe i could attach that other flange to the turbo outlet by heat, so that i put the outlet in some oven and that flange to freezer and after that few genttle bangs with a rubber hammer, and the flange would just slide in to the outlet and stay in there. Althought the fittings between the outlet and flange must in a right area.

After that just weld the other flange to the exhaust pipe and put the v-band on and it's done. So now only thing is left, is to actually do that and not just plan to do it .

Well, I got the truck back from the body shop and looked it over real hard and there's just no stinkin' way that any of those things would fit on my 088 turbo setup . there's just not enough room back there. but on the newer systems that drop off the side instead of off the back, there's a possibility that someone could pull it off, but with the 088 it looks like no matter how you slice it, it would wind up in the bellhousing. Why on earth they didn't just go with a bolt up flange directly to the housing is beyond me
I finally got my downpipe off, only had to remove the entire exhaust system and swing from it like a monkey
Took me longer to fool with that thing than it did to remove the tranny

I tried to weld it on there but due to me not know how to really weld for chit & it being cast it fell off trying to get the tranny in.
So for now I ain't going to bother with an exhaust since it ain't really that loud & Diesel fumes won't kill ya. Rather take the firewall rattle then a loose down pipe rattle. Really hear the turbo whistle too!

Even keeps the tranny coated-

What he said and yes, the 088 is the non wastegated setup
I got a good look at those side clamp setupps today at Truckpro and there's no way they would fit in there. I don't know about the newer systems though, they mount off to the passenger side and have more clearance so there might be a possibility there.

Never fear, no brain cells were in danger of overusage during the design of this system

Those are some really neet V clamp flanges. I may try one on my 3 inch down pipe to the 4 inch straight pipe.
