thats exactly what I was talking about!
I attempted a 6.9 C6 swap into a 77 supercab F150 2wd many years ago and sorting the steering linkage issue was my achilles heal. I toyed with the idea of a late 70s F150 4wd steerign box in front of the crossmember but the front frame rails would have needed complete boxing and reinforcing. this was back before the internet was in use................. yes I'm old, but still pulling wrenches.

Exactly what I did. Flipped the linkage in front of the axles. 78 steering box, still working on mounting the pump and lines. Crossmember needed no modification and tranny even stayed in factory location
