Hi, I have almost everything here to install sidewinder kit. At the same time I have a freshly rebuilt DB-2 5070 pump I would like to install. Can I remove front cover and line dowel pin to the top, and remove pump, marking the gears so they don't move, and put new IP in making sure gear inside doesn't move. Can it be done that way and stay in time? Also once turbo pump is on, will truck run without turbo installed, or is it time to go all the way? Thanks, Steve

I'll have a go at removing and replacing the IP. If I understand your post correctly you're thinking about removing the IP attached to the gear tower. Can it be done that way? Of course. Do we recommend doing it that way? Not a chance. The chance of putting things back together with the gear teeth correctly placed is marginal. It's way too easy to screw things up. If you're off by one tooth you're going to have a terrible time timing the engine.

I would suggest reading Mel's excellent article HERE before you start that task. He talks about IP removal, among other things. If you change the IP as suggested in that article the gear teeth cannot jump a tooth. If you need further instruction when the time comes, just ask.

I'll leave the turbo question to others.

Yes it will run with no turbo. That's called a N/A and there's LOTS of them out there. And yes. Leave the cover on the engine! Do not remove it!

From What I am understanding in the article is he removed the IP without removing the cover. If I mark the gear in a couple of places I should be able to verify that the gear is in the correct place and slide new Ip in place. Just curious if this pump is going to throw too much fuel till I get the turbo installed

Unless it's needed I wouldn't remove the cover, however it can be done I just did a few weeks ago as mine was leaking, the two bolts the hold the lemon shaped cover onto the housing can be removed and matched with a longer bolt of the same thread pitch. I very cautiously tightened them to the gear without to much tending so I didn't hurt the gear or the pump. This held my gear still while I removed the housing injection pump and all out of the truck to clean and reseal the cover and put back on. Only remove if you have to but the pump can be replaced without removing this housing fairly easily with a few choice words for the nut on the bottom of the pump passenger side lol but doable within a couple hours of work

If you leave the gear tower mounted on the engine then the gears cannot move. The IP can mount in only one way on the gears, so it will be within range of the small adjustment span on the timing. That is SO much safer than removing the entire gear tower.

You say you have a freshly rebuilt DB-2 IP, but you don't know who rebuilt it? How did that happen? There are a very few recommended rebuilders by forum members here, and many more you don't want to deal with. We've heard many horror stories.

You wont know where to set the fuel until you install it.

1.Don't install it incorrectly.Follow the instructions Ken posted.
2.Install the Ip and adjust the fuel to math the engine.
3.When you install the turbo, turn it up a flat and test drive.Repeat as needed.

A N/A IP can provide more fuel that even a turbo engine can use.So don't max the IP when you turbo it,the banks can't use it all without an intercooler,I know.
If you install an intercooler, then you can max the IP if you want.Just be sure to have an EGT gauge.
