Hey y'all. Have an 85 6.9 diesel. I noticed on the black plastic peice on the "right side when facing injector pump that where the vacuum line pushes on one is broken...any ideas what it is? Thinking governor but not sure. I will try and get a photo.

For auto trans to tell when to shift like above, you should get that fixed soon because that probably is causing a vacuum leak, leading to hard braking and probably isn't going to shift quite right I wouldn't imagine

Ok sounds good.
Well here's what's going on.
Hard start...obviously.
Runs at idle and around house good no issues.
Get on the road for about 10 minutes and it starts bellowing massive white and black smoke. Starts an injector knock and looses power.
If I let off and slow down it finally goes back to normal but will start up again when driving again after a few minutes.

Ok..I figured out what VRV is but been looking for it on line and have not been able to locate it any where. Any ideas on where to get it? I have a local International shop maybe they will have it.

VRV is a vacuum regulating valve. Tuff to find but.. Try Nappa. Absolutely needed for trans to shift.
As for the runaway ussues try dumping the fuel from the new filter and refill with auto trans fluid. Pour it ONLY into the small ring of holes in the filter. Pouring directly into the large center hole bypass the filter and any trans in the aft gets into the injection pump. I read you other post about this issue and think you have a gummed up injection pump. Once the engine is up and running on the atf you will hear it run differently. Shut the engine off and let this atf sit in the pump over night. Then run it hard the next day.If any gum is in the pump this usually cleans it out. You might still need a pump due to a bad governor ring as you may already know.

Ok. Thanks icanfixall.
Yea I didn't really understand how it would do good and then after a while at higher RPM it dumps too much. But if it gets to sticking somehow then it would make sense.
On my old 7.3idi I ran ATF a lot. Cheaper for cleaning than other stuff.
Never had any issues with IP in it. Wish I never got rid of that truck!

Just so you know, nothing on this truck uses engine vacuum so the hard to start issue isn't related to the broken vrv. The truck uses a vacuum pump for it's vacuum. All of the engine vacuum stays inside the engine, unlike a gasser.

The VRV is an obsolete item. Very hard to find even at a JY. It has to be a Ford VRV, not one for a Chevy.

Put your request in the Classified Wanted Forum, someone might have one.

I didn't know those were hard to find I had one stuck to a 6.9 pump(I belive) that I got off Craig's list for its fresh rebuild and cheap price, I took it off because I hVE a 5 speed. As to what I did with it after I'm not sure maybe I'll look around the shop and see if it's laying around somewhere in my parts

Yea I have been looking. I managed to save the nipple that was broke off and glued it back on. Waiting to see if it works. If not I saw some post about taking a GM one off a 6.2 and retro fitting it in place.
Hopefully this repair works until I find a way to do something better.
I know the hard Starr is a prime issue. Hoping it isn't the IP. Changed a line on the return side that was worn.
As for the other issue I'm having I'm still hoping it's an adjustment issue somewhere.
