7.3 Powerstroke/6.0 Powerstroke Vaccuum Pump

Anybody used one on one of our IDIs? The mounts look identical, and the pod/pump mechanism looks hardly any different. I read the later pumps put out more vacuum which I can’t imagine is a bad thing, and a 6.0 vacuum pump is cheaper than a junky dorman pos that I’d rather not waste my money on. Thoughts?

I have one running the hvac controls in my truck but I don't believe they put out anywhere near enough to run the brakes. Those trucks all came with hydroboost from the factory.

I haven't tried running the cruise control off it either, it just doesn't flow very much. Not an issue for you though because I'm pretty sure 92+ are all electric cruise control anyway.

I put a 96 powerstroke pump on my 93 IDI. It did fit and worked. It’s been 10 years ago so it’s a little fuzzy. There was something different about the sequence I had to install the bolts to make it work.

Any pictures? Did you run the serpentine belt setup with the PS pump?

Most all of the belt driven pumps are somewhat interchangeable. Have yet to see a superduty 7.3 or 6.0 with a belt driven vac pump.

I had a first gen 7.3 PSL vacuum pump on my Blue Truck. It has V belts. The drive unit from the PSD pump had a smaller shaft so my pulley couldn't be pressed onto it. I swapped the pod over to the V belt drive unit with no problems. The outlet elbow that the main vacuum line hooks to was at the wrong angle. I cut the elbow off of the bad pod, connected the two elbows with a short piece of 3/8" fuel line, and the attached the main vacuum line. The elbow on the PSD pod would have put vacuum line right against the passenger's side header. My guess is that it would have done the same thing with manifolds too.

The powerstroke and idi both had serpentine pulleys but one was 7 ribs and the other is 8 ribs. If you use an 8 rib belt on a 7 rib pulley it will automatically adjust the belt to 7 ribs quickly.

For the 6.0 pumps I’ve found, it was for the 04-10 years, and I’ll be damned if it doesn’t Look identical to our pump aside from the pulley and the line coming off of the pod.

I don't remember the year, but somewhere around '06 the engines went to the 6.4.

I dealt with this issue just recently. I swapped over a drive from a 87 6.9 to my motor but put a 93 serpentine pulley on it. I beefed with that pulley and drive for hours until I realized, that sucker ain’t going on and the shafts were different sizes, literally a 16th, probably a 32nd of an inch difference. I was forced to hit the pulley with a 11/16ths? (Can’t remember the size exactly) drill bit to ream it out so it would finally press on. I got it on but it’s not quite as straight as I’d like it to be so it’s got a bit of wobble while it runs. I know that’ll cause premature wear over time so I’m looking to just get a whole new pump assembly but I don’t want to drop money on a junky dorman that’ll wear out on me. Plus my truck is AC deleted so I’m running a 6 ribbed belt on the smooth pulley, just not ideal. Runs good, I’ve got good vacuum, but it’s bothering me so I’m looking for alternate routes to ease my OCD lol.

2008. 2003 to 2007 was 6.0

So the e series uses a mechanical vac pump, new about the 7.3 in the e series, but have not seen a 6.0 van yet.
