Since I've owned my truck I have had no reason to put it in 4x4.

I tried the other day and got some nice grinding noises going from 2h to 4h and back. Rolling about 10mph, hubs locked, transmission in neutral I think.

There is some guidance in the form of a placard on my truck, however experience with manual transfer cases in Jeeps tells me that some technique usually helps. What do you guys do? I have the 1356 BW

I have an automatic transmission, and unless I am stopped and in neutral, I get the grinding noises too. BOTH of my trucks are the same way. Auto, but have to be stopped.

Works out ok, because I have to get out and turn the hubs anyway.

Stop. Put the truck in neutral. Some 4x shifters have to be pushed in or pulled out, then shifted.

My 89, once you are stopped and in neutral, just shift the 4x, In my 92, you have to push the shifter down, or in, then you can shift it into gear.

I've never had issues while going between 2hi and 4hi while moving with my 1345 transfer cases.

Shift my 90 all the time rolling with little noise. tires need to be all the same size and not under load when doing. I drove a lot of old farm trucks with straight cut gears too.

Shifting from 2H to 4H can be done while the truck is moving so long as:
#1. All of the tires are rotating at the same speed. Meaning don't attempt to shift into 4x4 while rear tires are spinning due to lost traction.
#2. All of the tires are pointing in a straight direction. If you attempt shifting into 4x4 while rounding a curve, it's gonna grind.

For me from 2H to 4H shift is no problem and vise versa while moving but I have to stop and fight and I mean Fight to get it into neutral then 4L. I think my linkages may be a little jacked up.:(

You're supposed to stop to go into 4L....
You are taking it out of gear?

I have auto transmission and hubs. I stop and have no issues going from 2 hi to 4 hi but have to put the transmission in N to go to t- case N and 4 lol and it takes a bit of effort but no grinding.

Not to state the obvious but have you checked fluid levels? When was the last time you changed the fluid in it? I have had vehicles with the wrong fluid in transfer case, transmission, differentials, coolant when I purchased them (hard to be sure on some). That's why I always plan on changing all the fluids soon after buying a used vehicle. Mine was hard to shift when I got it, changed the fluid to the correct stuff it made it so much better.

@Selahdoor you might want to lock your hubs before you need 4WD. It might save you a face plant in a mid hole.

Some people run with their hubs locked now and then to keep stuff lubed. Some run all winter with them locked. I make my passenger do it. I need to stay in the truck and stand on the brake. Hehe

lol

I always lock in my hubs when I need 4WD. I do it before shifting. And I shift back out, before I unlock them.

Ok, two things. Gas mileage and turning radius.

If I leave them locked in all the time, it turns just like it was in 4WD. Clunky, and wide. I don't like that.

Also leaving them locked reduces fuel mileage. And I am jealous of every mile per gallon!

I locked mine at the first rain and unlocked them around April. Mileage suffered some. I have owned 4 x 4 since I was 18 years old. Trucks and Jeep.
