im looking at a 10.25 locking rear axle. My question is this : should there be any amount of slack when I twist the yoke? The seller says “yes” due to the locking mechanism... what say ye?

Every axle I've ever seen has had some slight rotational slop. Some more than others. Has nothing to do with the locking mechanism.

There should never be any in and out play in the pinion though.

All differential gear sets (well almost all gear sets) have backlash. They must, or the gears will eventually make the lash...

If you grab the yolk, it should rotate back and forth, in the normal driveshaft direction of movement, a bit. But if you get a quarter or half a turn, then that gearset is worn out, or there’s some other issue. Is should just rock back and forth.

If you grab and push and pull on the pinion, away and towards the housing, it shouldn’t move. There may be a hint of movement, but if you can pull it in and out a lot, the pinion bearings are shot.

Yes all axles have a set amount of "play" or AKA backlash so it doesn't tear up the gear set when you let off the go pedal.

No it's not due to the locker. If it's a limited slip, it doesn't lock up until one of the tires slips.

As stated before there should be no or very little in/out play on the yoke.

Ok just like the above with a little clarification...

Backlash is usually found to be rather a small amount (Examply only..)..like.005-.012 equates to perhaps 1\16" -1\4" rotational on the yolk...max imho...

Clb pretty much nailed the backlash detail.

There's no factory 'locking' 10.25" rear axle. The factory calls it a limited-slip differential or LSD for short, which in all practicality is limited grip. (i.e. the applied torque and friction material tries its best to make both axle shafts turn at the same speed; but given large enough difference in traction, it loses its grip and slips anyway). The LSD itself has no 'slack' per-se as it is works the same as an open diff, but has extra frictional resistance.

If it moves more than 1/4 inch in either direction there is something worn. Typically it is the spider gears that cause that but in rare cases could be the ring gear or incorrect shims.

Ok guys I bit the bullet, and bought the differential. I hope I didnt make a major mistake. Im gonna pop the rear cover this weekend. My buddy donated a set of brake shoes along with a complete spring kit, and 2 wheels cylinders!! FREE!!! If my terrible luck holds out this differential should last me until retirement in 6 (?) more years.
