Shaking violently when first accelerating from stop

hi everyone,

Thanks in advance for reading and the help. Just picked up an '83 F250, 6.9 IDI 4-speed manual, 38k miles.

Today I noticed that the truck shaking when transitioning from clutch to gas in first gear from a dead stop. Doesn't shake once the clutch is fully disengaged in first, and doesn't shake when shifting through any other gears- only shakes while shifting into first from a dead stop. The shaking is at the engine, I don't feel it in the stick. It got worse throughout the day, and I never noticed it prior to today. I was making a few trips to the landscape supply store today and noticed the shaking was a bit worse when the truck was loaded.

I a yard of rock in the bed of the truck this morning, and parked it on a mild slope in 2nd gear to keep it from rolling for about 30 minutes- The e-brake is frozen right now. I can't imagine that would have anything to do with it but the problem seemed to start not long after that.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Are you sure it’s from the engine? Sure sounds like wheel hop. If not broken motor mount?

Not dmf w 6.9

Clutch has been smoked and has hot spotted the pp and fw thus creating a likely uneven engaugment but when rolling its easier to not feel that due to less friction needed to make truck go.

Alright, well sounds like the overwhelming thought is the clutch. Does it make sense that I wouldn't feel it in the stick though? The whole front end shakes, hood chattering, but I don't feel anything in the stick when my hand is on it. I also forgot to mention - it occurs when transitioning from dead stop to reverse as well (while disengaging clutch). Again, not noticeable in shifting through any other gears once rolling.

I can't speak to the 4 speeds, but the ZF5s have a really "fast" reverse gear which in my experience makes the bucking/shaking even worse than first gear. Just my .02, have somebody else drive it and get their take.

Is it when disengaging (pushing pedal in) or engaging (letting pedal out) the clutch?? My 88 gasser would hop and shake if I was too "fast" with the clutch either way in first (second actually hardly used granny if it wasn't loaded) both forward or reverse and I wouldn't feel much in the stick... My clutch was "fair" when i rebuilt the motor and I didn't have the funds to replace it at the time, then i learned how to "float the gears" without using the clutch so I never bothered to replace it....

WOW!! I recently had this similar chatter problem. It went on for 2 days, every time I backed out of driveway, came to a stop and accelerating and through every gear. if the clutch was engaged or transmission in Neutral there was not chatter. I drove the truck for or 5 times no more than 10 miles at a time, as sudden as the gripe came on, it went away! Weird!!

So right after I got my 86 I started having close to same problem and what had happened is when the previous owner had the clutch replaced the mechanic stripped out the bottom 2 bolts on the trans where it mates to the bell housing and I had to run bolts through and put a nut and washer on the back just to pull it all apart and replace the clutch and pilot bearing
