Walked outside to see my truck on fire last night.

Good thing I decided to go outside last night and good thing my truck houses a fire extinguisher. I walked out the front door and fire was coming out from the passenger side wheel well. Quick thinking and good reaction had the fire extinguished in about 30 seconds. Inspection today reveals that an internal short under the positive battery post caused a melt down and fire to ensue. Never seen a battery do that before.

Now to develop a plan of attack.

Nothing short of replacing "that battery" the day before the failure would have prevented this. Probably 35 years back we drove to San Diego to visit Shamu. Stopped for dinner on way home. After dinner went to start my C30 454 camper special and all I got was a sudden maybe 1/4 turn of the engine. then not a single light was on.No power from single battery... Found out the battery from Sears suffered an internal short on the positive side. I'm VERY LUCKY it did not blow up from the hydrogen gas any battery makes when charging......

Glad you caught it.

I had a buddy who was in the middle of a remodel and no smoke detectors. He walked out to his attached garage in the middle of the night to admire his mustang, and saw smoke and flames. Just like you, he had some sort of internal short in the battery.

For those that have fire extinguisher mounted in your trucks, how and where did you put them? I have one in the jeep, but the truck should get one too.

I wouldn't say it's real common, but I have seen a lot of batteries like that in the army.

It was mounted behind the left rear door, on the floor hump beside the seat.

I have one in my toolbox, and one behind the seat in the corner of the cab. I need to work up some mounts.

In the jeep having one where the driver, passenger, or bystanders can get to it quickly is very important. For the truck I'm thinking about on the floor in front of the center console/seat.

So... time to move the batteries to a less flammable location, like mounted to the frame rail behind the cab? Where there's far less flammable stuff close by to ignite?

As an added benefit, batteries there would give you more room up front for intercooler/turbo piping!
