Valve timing?

Hey all,

As far as I know, the only timing to worry about on these is the IP timing right?

I ask because two people have mentioned Valve timing to me, one is my cocky brother in law who talks out his rear but another is a well respected local mechanic so what gives? Are they just thinking of a different motor? These are gear driven so the valve timing should be fine right?

I'm also curious now that I'm thinking about it, are these adjustable valves anyway or are they set like the ones on my old 351W?

not really sure where those ideas have come from. the only thing you can do is move IP to time the motor but its the same as moving a distributer in a gas job. none of the valve train is adjustable either.

you can change the placement of the cam and IP gear but it would require the motor to be dissembled and wouldn't run good or at all.

the R&D cam requires you to offset the timing marks.
this is the same idea in "degreeing" your cam in a gasser.
with less flexability.
if youre running a stock cam, the marks need to be straight up.
only IP adjustment on a stock style engine.

the 6.9/7.3 are non adjustable valve train, which means you torque the rockers down and youre done.
ive got a set of Harland sharpe roller rockers that are adjustable, but this cost a pretty penny.

Very nice! Also just curious what did those run you? I would have liked to get a set but my budget is already exhausted.

I'm sure he'll chime in but you might not want to know lol! I remember seeing the thread and they're basically a custom one-off job. The place will make them but they're made to order not stocked because of lack of demand and high cost.

I can't remember exactly how much, but I'm thinking I remember they cost almost as much as I paid for my truck lol!

ive bought trucks for half of what I paid for the pushrods.

the rockers, Harland sharpe made 3 sets of, I got the third.
others are made to order.
they cost me 900.
the pushrods cost 250

That's really not too bad then. For some reason I was thinking it was closer to $2000.

I swear I'm going to have y'all find me another cheap IDI some day, I never get a steal lol!

$900 isn't bad when you consider what new stock replacements are. Maybe one day I'll get a set, but for now my budget is just too tight.
