GM 14blt rear axles?

Has anyone swapped in a 14blt rear axle from a GM truck? I know they are 10.5" ring gear and after 75(?) they had 13" brakes. Not that anything is wrong with my trucks rear end, but I had thoughts of hanging onto this 14blt for a later 4wd swap.

BTW, my truck is an 84 F250 2wd, 6.9na,T19 and what I "think" is a D70.

I personally wouldn't Chevy has weak rear ends(what year or you looking at?)
But you have some options
1-Super Duty Axles(D60-Sterling) can be picked up cheap
2- Sterling from 83-97 fords
I like the Sterling axles but they also have some problems(search around)

Not understanding the weak part of a 14blt? Plus they have a huge aftermarket support for lockers,gears,diff covers,brakes,etc.. As for Sterlings, I have done too much research, but when I was "searching" for threads on the 14blt, I saw so many "Sterling problem" threads, that I dont think I would consider one now. Not trying to argue any point, just need more info. Thanks

The 14 bolt is arguably stronger than the 10.25". IIRC, ring gear was closer to 11-11.5" and definitely tons of aftermarket support. The pinion has internal support like the Ford 9". Biggest issue with running then under a Ford is that there is no provisions for an ABS/speed sensor on top of the housing. Having an '84, you probably don't have anything to worry about there. I can't comment on sputtering perch spacing though, I'm not certain that it's the same.

14 bolts are stronger than the 10.25, agreed.
ive never had a pinion nut loosen on a 14 bolt
these are a corporate product.
i have used them alot on trucks, cars, and hotrods.

you will need to weld new spring perches.
the difference is a few inches, but will need to be cut off and re-welded on.

14 bolt are weaker than 10.25 however they hqve a better pinion design.

I would strongly suggest folks check gross input torque load and so forth before spouting a is stronger than b malarchy....

I will let you folks touting the 14 bolts incredulous strength over the 10.25 prove uour point first since you said it first.

I agree though pinion design is better.

Lots of yokes out there to set it up with the right one. I've always preferred the 10.25". Strong, simple, has ports for the ABS sensor (and it makes it easier to fill), plus I don't have to re-degree pinion angle and cut/weld perches. I've only ever looked into it in planning a 6x6. The US Gear (very bad rap) over axle gearbox bolts directly to it and I was curious if it could be made into a drive-thru axle (pinion on either side) as a different option. That's a whole 'nutter mess

So, riot, do YOU have those figures? I have seen the 14blt in trucks from BONE STOCK 292 inline 6 to blown alky injected pullers.

Looks like the Sterling peak torque is about a ton higher. I'd like to see factory numbers though.

but they also have weak rear ends in them especially if its got the g80 locker in it.

Id pull the rear end cover and have a look at the spider gears and pin.these trucks have very weak rears in them.
