IDI vs OLDer gas F series for long run parts, fuel ?

Ok, this has really gone out to left field.

If we are talking about Nuclear SHF situation, the IDI will not be affected. The FSS is just a connection, not a relay or signal. Those are what will fail in an EMP (computers will mostly be ruined unless they were not on during the pulse).

If we are talking about zombie apocalypse, go with a diesel. You can safely fill it while idling and you know that if the zombies are staggering toward you, the first thing that will go wrong is your vehicle will suddenly not start anymore.

If we are talking about societal collapse, Go with a former military vehicle. They are mostly diesel anyway and made to last under adverse conditions. Not so easy to find parts for, but you can get far away from the rampaging mobs and withstand small arms fire in most.

My vote will always be diesel, because the fuel is stable and the engines can run on many variations of commonly available liquids. Gasoline, at best, will last for about 3 years with stabilizing agents and perfect storage conditions. Also, diesel engines can idle with a bare minimum of fuel to keep them running, in case you have battery problems. Gas engines are not nearly as efficient. I would also favor N/A for simplicity and fuel economy. No matter how fast you try to drive them, they will still get pretty good MPG.

Parts are the last issue you need to worry about. Water and Food are first, shelter and protection next.

On d-day peppers, they took the fluid from a transformer to run in a diesel tractor.

If I was only driving a couple miles a day, gas would be my choice simply and only due to the fact that they are easier to start and warm up quicker. I feel bad if I have to put a diesel through this kind of abuse, especially in frigid temperatures. Luckily, I don't have to very often. But in all other scenarios, I would choose diesel for all the reasons stated above.....and at the end of the day the cost of ownership is usually lower than a gas pot.

I am a fan of all things blue oval, and have worked on the small block since it was a 221 cid. I consider it a very dependable engine with a stout bottom end. The only weak area I see is the cam timing chain.

As for fuel, the diesel it the way to go, esp an idi. If every station is out of fuel and every car around is out, you still have millions of vehicles that have their engine and tranny filled with a fuel source an idi can run on. Some kind of onboard filter system would be the way to go.

I am joking for the most part but am serious, I pay attention to what is going on and things are not as they appear on the mainstream news.

I have come to the conclusion the country has been sold and the new owners are taking it down on purpose so if you want a last vehicle for the long run I feel now may be your last chance to get it.

I am curious as to what is the best vehicle for long term operation if things continue to collapse the way the are now.

Are glow plugs affected by EMP and what kind of computer electronics does a IDI have or does it not have one. The new vehicles can be hacked by satellite I believe.

A bicycle or motorcycle?, I love 2 wheel vehicles and own many of many varieties. I love off road motorcycles. They are by far one of the top 5 finest vehicles ever made.

I would say a Saturn V is #1, a helicopter is in there as well. As far as off road vehicles go a modern Moto X bike is the most versatile machine ever and with a good operator will out run anything on varying types of terrain. A Harrier or Copter is about the only thing that would be able to track one that carries people.

From the responses most feel old school diesel is hard to beat, some of the people in my neck of the woods have been getting old points gas motors going just in case.

When it's all said and done, mechanical diesel will get my vote also.
Cummins are easy to convert to mechanical fuel shut off. Can take waste oil abuse. Just have to worry about the front end.

Ultimate bug out? My 1ton IDI, with spare parts a RTT and then on the deck it's packing my Muscateer 6x6 with the IDI Kubota diesel engine. Old slow and fun and amphibious! Just add fuel n go damn near anywhere!

Are you guys seriously considering the EMP threat? If so, use that running vehicle to get as far from civilization as possible. The studies I've seen allow a few days of "camaraderie" because of the shared experience and "we're all in this together. Then the thugs begin to realize that there are no consequences for thuggish behavior, and they begin to prowl, and steal. With no civil authority, the strongest mob controls. Get far away into the mountains and fend for yourself.

For me, that is not a world I would desire to live in for very long....I doubt that I should have to worry about that.
