After a full night of sitting it has a hard time starting. I have air intrusion SOME where but I can't figure it out.

Here is what I know :

- It takes all night for it to have issues.
- If I park with the nose DOWN it starts up fine.
- The filter head has pressure in the morning. It doesn't spray fuel but does have noticeable pressure.
- I pulled the return line that crosses over in front of the intake. It made pressure relief sounds and was full of diesel.
- I do have a visible fuel leak somewhere around the IP. It is wet under the IP belly, before the hard lines.
- Fuel mileage is roughly 16mpg
- It has a new return line kit from Russ with viton rings.
- No wet lines or signs of returns leaking fuel out.
- It started somewhat recently, after I had been bumping around messing with the IP.

My first thought was I bumped a line loose. I cannot find any leaks and as I said, the cross over return line had pressure. Now I'm thinking my fuel leak is causing it , they started having issues around the same time. I just cannot figure out where I'm leaking fuel. I had thought it was a loose hard line at the IP but it is not wet at any connection. It is wet before the hard lines on the belly of the IP. The fuel screw door is not leaking.

Any help is greatly appreciated, as always :D

My truck will start fine if I park it with the front of the truck pointed down the driveway too. But the other direction it will start but you know its looseing fuel by how it stumbles starting sometimes. Nothing is wet anywhere so the leak is sucking in air and not pushing out fuel.... Yet..

If the filter head has pressure it has to be after the head, correct? But then my return lines have pressure, so .. ?

I "can" park nose down, but I'd rather fix it. If mine wasn't leaking fuel out it would probably be put off for a few weeks.

Run the truck to normal operating temp., while still running take a small mirror and light and check the ip's weep hole for a leak. The weep hole is about a half to three quarters of a inch behind the gear housing. You should be able to see a drip and as it gets worst it will begin to run a steam of fuel.

That definitely sounds like my issue. What is the hole for? Can it be fixed? I JUST paid to have this thing timed.

I pulled the hard line from filter to IP to check the olives. They are completely toast. I'm not sure what they are suppose to look like but if it's what I'm thinking I should be able to get them at a hardware store (?) . I also found a soaked return line that was hiding under the filter box. I pulled it to replace the hose but the line was FULL of fuel ...

To my understanding there is a seal on the inside of the pump, when it gives way, it will act just like the one found on our water pumps. I have experienced the seal give out and send a steam of fuel flowing to the back the engine and to the front driver's side head and exit down the side of the engine. There's nothing that can be done except get Mel or someone to rebuild it. Check as I prescibed earlier...

I don't know if you can find the line olives at a hardware store or not??? You can get a ip install kit at Advance Auto and Auto Zone for around $15.00. That kit contains three fuel line olives, three injector pump to injector pump timing gear bolts and one large o-ring for the injector pump shaft to ip mounting. The next avenue would be go to a Ford or Navistar dealership.

I would defiantely change out the return line underneath your air box and as you mentioned and change out the fuel olives, an see if this corrects the problem before doing any work to the ip.

I searched but only found return line kits. Any chance you have a P/N ? My local parts stores are far from competent and I know I won't be able to get one without a P/N.

mine gave me the same frustrations where if nose up, it started harder than nose down. I knew I didn't have any leaks, but I don't have stock fuel lines anymore. My suspicion was that the 3/8" return line was not all fuel, and had air in there somehow. (my fuel tank is an in bed 115 gallon L tank)

So I put a 1 way check valve in line on the return line which doesn't "pop open" until it has 7psi. No more problems like that.

I don't have a small mirror to peak under the pump so I have to wait until tomorrow when I can buy one. I looked at it again and I am really thinking it's the weep hole. It really sucks because it didn't leak anything until after I had it timed.. so the only thing I can do now is toss my other pump on and have it timed again. I will still replace the olives first, they need to be replaced regardless. It's hard to tell if that leak is contributing to the MESS under the engine .. I have a bad leak on the left and right rear side of the engine. It looks like oil mixed with fuel. Sadly, I think the oil part of it is coming from either the driver rear head or intake.

Oregon Fuel Injection will have the olives. So will typ4. Usually a torch is needed to remove them from the line caps or soaking overnite in brake fluid softens them up. They are not supposed to be at the hard line flair. That part needs to be pushed deep into the fittings on the filter head and the injection pump. These olives are a terrible way to seal off a line. I think they were designed to reduce vibration in the fuel system. Mel makes a nice replacement feed line hose from the filter to the injection pump. I think Typ4 dioes too...

I actually always forget that I have them as a local resource :D. I'll have to pm Mel or Russ, any idea which one of them is less swamped with work? :)

Thanks for the props, guys. Hopefully the info was right. I ended up not replacing mine. BTW, Russ DOES include olives in his return line kits.
