[SOLVED] Do these trucks have a problem with glow plug relays?

I replaced my glow plug relay with 275,000kms on my '90 7.3L. Saturday I went to go start my truck ant the WTS light goes out immediately. I tried again sunday morning, same thing. This is exactly what happened to me last time my glow plug relay went. Are these trucks known for this? I can't believe in only 10,000kms the thing went.

The service life will depend on the quality of the part. What about your glowplugs? How old and what brand?

I can't remember what brand exactly... like "glowlite" or something? I think it's a fairly decent brand. Anyways, I replaced them at the same time as the controller. If I recall correctly, if I have just 1 bad plug doesn't that make the glow plug relay shut off shorter than normal, and not just instant shut off?

Get rid of your "glow lite" and get some motorcrafts. Anything else is looking for problems. That may fix your problem right there

O I thought you had 'Glow lite' glow plugs. It has been proven that anything other than Motorcraft Glow plugs have a tendency to burn out quickly and have the tips fall off into the cylinder.

As far as the controller, I dont use anything other than FORD electrical items.

I was talking about my glow plugs before. So... tips into cylinders... that... sounds... awful. Well I'm going to replace the controller again anyways, since last time I had this problem it was the controllers fault. Last time I could get the WTS light to stay on for different lengths of time if I kept switching the key on and off. This time it just goes off immediately. It's going to cost me $100 to replace... but I imagine plugs will be around the same price. I guess I'm just going to go with the process of elimination :p.

Alot of times when you have bad glow plugs, it will burn out the controller

Really? So... I should probably do new plugs at the same time? What's the cost on 8 motocraft plugs? about a hundred?

What a crappy design flaw.

Glow plugs, Oregon price

As I recall, the glow plugs from Knechts here in Oregon are about $6.00 a piece? Might have been $8.00, don't recall. So, roughly $48.00 - $64.00. And, as stated, anything other than Motorcraft plugs is asking for a bullet in the back. I have a spare set of plugs in my glove box, all Motorcraft. I refuse to take chances.;Sweet

My 6.9 had that problem a few years ago, I taught it was the controller to as I tested all glow plugs with a test light and all were good.

It's only after removing all 8 plugs and testing them directly on a battery that I found out, 3 were bad. They would heat up, but not glow red like their suppose to.

As for brands, I really don't know anymore.... i've been hearing to many bad experiences with Motorcraft plugs here lately. Who knows, maybe a mass production bad batch?

I've never replaced all 8 plugs at once, I only replace the bad ones, i'm a cheap ******* :D

I have a mix of Autolight, Champions, Bosch and I think theres still some Motorcraft ones left in there.

Never had any bad things happen ever. Now the Autolights and Champions don't last as long as the Bosch or Motorcraft ones though...

So I'd recommend either Bosch or Motorcraft.

The controller works on current flow through it to determine the cycle time. Burnt out glowplugs and bad connections can affect the current flow through the controller(as well as different brand glowplugs) which can make the cycle time too short, or not work at all. Mine would short cycle, and all it turned out to be was bad connections from the wire to the glowplugs themselves.

I went to the manual system to eliminate all those variables.
