thank you greatly for the welcome and yes that poor old truck in my avatar has seen many many haed miles both on highway and off road....i use her to get into areas that search and rescue needs equipement and in my former job of tow truck driver i use to use it to get to the ppl that i could get the tow truck to when they were way back in the sticks. She has never let me down and still has alot of giddyup to her Only 147,000 miles on her.

I just wish she were an extended cab or a crew cab.

Goose, other than #4, the rest of those cylinders sound good. Leavng out #4 the next worst cylinder is 89% and change of the very best. It could even be nothing is really wrong there other than a blown head gasket internally, but that engine needs to be checked very closely for cavitation. If the worm ate it, I would advise just dropping in your spare and using all the good parts from this one. and then part out the old block. I'd be a bit scared to rebuild a big C motor. Done right they are better than new but most hack machinists can't do a dry sleeve right. If you have somebody that knows diesel and you trust them and can afford to pay for all 8 holes to be sleeved then that is theright way to fix it. In any case the engine proba needs fresh gaskets and a cgood cleaning since that coolant was getting in. Maybe you just lifted a head with your high boost #s. Lets hope so!

7.3 has been extracted

Ok, the name given to this thread no longer applies, the 7.3 has been extracted from the engine bay!! Gonna clean up the garage and start the dissection tomorrow. I'm thinking about starting a new thread relating to testing for the worm and the test plate i'm going to make. I can't wait to have leak down data to share. I believe this will be good data for everyone to have access to. Other people will be able to do this test to eliminate the question of the worm and to see if a low compression number is due to worn heads or piston & rings.

As you can see, I left the grill and radiator in place. The truck has 305/70-16's and a front aal. The hoist was maxed out and I had to let air out of the tires, about half way collapsed. The clutch was still on during removal, not too bad for a 1st timer with diesels. My biggest hang up was not realizing that the diesel engine mounts have two studs on each one. No big deal as its laying on some dunnage now.

Im not brave enough to leave the radiator core support in, but i dont really have nothing more to lift mine out than a tree and a come-a-long so i dont want to lift in no more than i got to

A little time to regroup...

Nothing too exciting today, pressure washed engine bay and the donor engine. Took a few pics of the donor truck so everyone knows what I'm getting into next. The spare engine has nearly half the miles and looks pretty clean to me. ;SweetI might time this extraction to see how proficient I can be with the learning curve out of my way:sly. I'm sure Murphy's Law will get me if I get too cocky.:backoff

Junk Harbor Freight compression tester let me down,:backoff saw that coming from a mile away!!! The adapter does not fit into the GP hole. I knew it was against my better judgement to even entertain the notion of going to that cesspool of a store.

U know I notice U guys seem to have a lot of Problems with Harbor freight Stuff I have Both a Mac tools and a Harbor freight Compression Tester and They both read within 5 lbs of each other;Sweet So i dont see what the Problem is :dunno

and as far as My harbor freight tester and the GP adapter It fits in My 7.3 just fine ;Sweet

Its not always the HF stuff (in my case it was), its the way that buying foreign crap ruins our economy and how this stuff is acceptable in todays throw away world. China owns our precious metals now, our factories and steel plants are no longer here, the shipping industry is the biggest user of fossil fuel in the world and our unemployment is through the roof. If you are a tree hugger, take pride knowing that the laws regarding polluting are much looser over seas also. HF just embraces all of what I can't stand in regards to our country no longer being able to sustain itself.
