Well working on Darrins latest find, I discovered a large oil leak coming from the exhaust manifolds. I ruled out valve cover gaskets as there was oil also exiting from the manifold to crossover pipe mating area.

Soo off with the valve covers I went yesterday and lookie what I found!

I found 4 exhaust valve guide seals completely disintegrated!

I just so happened to have a set floating around in the shop so on they went.

I pulled the valve stem out of adapter for the compression gauge and fitted it to my air hose and charged the cylinders with 100 psi of air and to work I went.
Replaced all 8 seals on the exhaust side and no more oil dumping into the manifolds.:D

So here's a few pics of the process. ;Sweet
Sorry for the low quality but the blackberry doesn't do well in lower light situations.

hope you solve the issue, but looking at the condition on the pushrod tips and caked on oil residue dont look too healthy an engine, if the guides are loose excessive oil consumption will cause the condition you exprienced.
Them IDIs take a licking and keep on ticking!

The stems were good and snug so the guides are in good shape still.;Sweet

you already own a choker truck.....what made the IDI that special?

We are trying to sell the '05 F350 and replace it with an IDI dually 4x4.. The 4x4 is necessary, to get this 5er backed up the hill and into it's spot.. 4lo is my friend....

The seals appear to be the wrong type for the exhaust valves. You know what the umbrella type seals look like for the exhaust valves.... I think you installed the positive type seals and they will run the guides way too dry. Please tell me those are the intake seals that you replaced.....

When I had mine replaced, the new ones looked like what Ron used...now you have me wondering because my truck seems to use a bit of oil...

Is she going to be able to give up all the creature comforts the '05 has to offer?

Any one have a photo of the difference between the intake and exhaust valve seals.

Me post pictures... Surely you jest.... The umbrella seals for the exhaust are plastic and they attach up in the spring retainer... Not on the guides in the head like the intakes do. these motors have had three differant exhaust seals. The first seal leaked too much oil into the exhaust... The second seal was the positive type seal. It stopped all oil to the valve... That ruined the guide and some dropped valves... Finally the correct design came to be. Thats the umbrella seal. That works great
