Planning to have new exhaust valve guides installed in my heads soon. Intake guides seem to be in great shape, but all the exhaust guides are beyond the max spec of .0055" at the widest point. I understand that these engines all had some issues with excessive exhaust valve guide wear. There's application-specific cast iron guides available, or I can have aftermarket style bronze guides or liners installed. Any reason to choose one over the other? I'm aiming for longevity. Will bronze guides solve the underlying issue, or is that a result of poor valvetrain geometry, excessive heat on the exhaust valve, or something else altogether? Most of the info I can find on valve guide selection is mainly aimed at performance gasoline engines, and I wasn't sure if there were specific considerations for these diesels.

Go with the bronze liners and you'll be just fine. That is the solution to the exhaust valve guides wearing out prematurely.

It would seem that roller rockers would alleviate some of this problem, but man are they expensive for our engines!!
