Intercoolers for dummys

Yeah that makes sense too. So much for making 20+ psi of boost "at all cost".

So what sort of EGT drop under max power conditions are you guys seeing?

Would I be asking too much for dyno numbers for before and after?

about 250 deg less at full load at 10 psi. pump cranked. the ps intercooler may seem like overkill but it made such a big difference in my truck that it cant be way to big.

Truth be told, I peaked at 1100 maybe once or twice since owning the truck and never moved anything more than 5000lbs. Think I was squeezing down the carpet on the way up the road to the ski slopes (no cooling fan either LOL). Intercooler is probably more of a concern if/when I get a moose pump. I am wondering if if there would be any MPG gains for more mild conditions like the 2-5 psi range where EGTs are normally 700 or less for me. The answer seems to be a yes or at least a maybe, from what I am reading.

Guess I am trying to justify the expense when in reality all I am thinking about is hunting down powerstrokes on the open road. Had a confirmed kill already on a 10% gradeLOL. Should be possible to even the score if you had the higher fuel flow and intercooler that later PS engines came with from factory with.

So is there even a point in going with 3" plumbing? Seems to me like 2.5" should be plenty and easier to fit.

Dunno if the larger diameter will be a help or hinderance based off of resistance coupled with a PSD IC.

I'll speak up when I get my system installed.:dunno

I wish I had 2.5 piping, it would fit all around better, it is plenty for the engine, remember the turbo outlet is about 1 7/8 ID or less. Any of those IC's from ebay will be an easy fit. If I was to do it over a 30x12x2.5 would go behind the bumper with cutouts.

Russ, are you stating that I should cut my intercooler per your size preference? I have yet to cut mine and I was going to copy what you currently have in your truck.

Turbo outlet size was my reasoning too but there is also more length to consider with an intercooler compared to simply dumping the air into the intake strait out from the turbo.

Guess thats settled though. Stay away from 3" intercoolers. 2.5 might even be much by the sounds of it.

David, you can run a 3 inch intercooler just use the smaller piping. The core size or volume of the intercooler,combined with the design of the inlet and outlet, determines the pressure loss of the IC. Smaller piping helps to keep air velocity up which ultimately reduces lag.

I would just cut it down like I did mine. Basically to the ttop of the tubes. I have a pic somewhere.

Haddn't thought of it that way, but I thought total flow was what mattered. However less air volume between the turbo and the intake would mean less lag. Smaller diameter = less lag.

They seem to offer the exact same intercooler with 2.5" and 3" openings so that would keep things simple and eliminate the need to step the plumbing up or down.

i will have to to use reducers for the 6.0 intercooler. speaking of which, one inlet in 3 inches, the other is almost 3.25 inches. where would i find a reducer to go from 3.25 down to 2.5?

My intercooler had 3" openings, and I had to step them down to 2.5", then used 2.5 inch pipe until I got to the Hypermax stuff, and had to step to 2.25 again. Got all my stuff from siliconeintakes.com
