Hey Mel ya got an idear what the serial numbers for those "A"'s would fall under?

Mater may have one that would fall into that category.:sly

Simplest way is to look at the emissions sticker on the valve cover. If it says A170, it's an A engine; if it says B170, it's a B engine. Another way to check is to look at your engine serial number. If the s/n's under 59209, it's an A engine...anything higher and it's a B engine.

Lol you guys. Don't worry about the threadjack, doesn't bother me when people are discussing stuff and learning from it. :) It's all good.
I'll add to the Model "A" discussion just this little tid bit. Model A blocks have a problem with the blocks cracking around the block heater freeze plug. Also, model A engines used different head castings than the rest of the 6.9 family did and they are also prone to cracking if you're not careful. BUT, we ran my grandpas 83 for years and years, over 650,000 miles, and only had one head crack once and never had any problems with using the factory block heater. But from what I've been told we got VERY lucky. I love my 6.9's. My moms 94 CC now has a 6.9 in it and she says it doesn't have anywhere near the amount of power her IDIT 7.3 had. I have a hard time believing that since it has all of the IDIT parts on it.

i like the 6.9 better than the 7.3 but it seems to me that the 7.3 has more bottom end torque

Actually, this problem isn't limited to Model A blocks. Early Model B blocks have the same problem; it was corrected starting with s/n 173828, which IIRC corresponds with about midway through the 1985 model year.

BTW, I'm getting my data from a Ford publication that was issued in '85 or '86. It was posted in .pdf form on TDS a few years back. If anyone's interested, I can E-mail it or upload to the Web and provide a link (although I'm not sure when I'll get a chance to get to it). I've never taken the time to read through all of it, but there's some VERY good info in the parts that I have read. I took a screen shot of the breakdown of the various improvements made (as of the date of publication) along with the corresponding serial numbers. The "1984 Exhaust Emissions Engine" mentioned in the table is the Model B. Actually, I think you can put Model A heads and pistons on a Model B block if you wanted to; to my understanding, the differences are in the heads, the pistons, and the precups.

What screen resolution are you running? The full-size picture is 871x1000 pixels. If you're just seeing the "preview" picture, click on the picture again and it should pop up full-size in a new window. FWIW, I'm not having any problems reading it on my 1280x960 screen...
