I know that a couple of the dealerships around here are doing it, and the techs that kill the cars strip as much good stuff as possible as fast as possible. I doubt thats in the deal, but if I get the chance to snag some goodies before the wrecking yard guys do I will.

(before anyone takes that as an insult, keep in mind I KNOW most of the people that work for wrecking yards in this area and for the most part, there is a good reason they destroy things for a living)

I will keep my truck until the day I die, unless it comes down to keeping a roof over my kid's heads or feeding my family. Even then, my fellow OB members will have first shot at the truck. There is no way that I will give up my truck for $3,500-$4,500 (even though I only paid $600) towards a newer vehicle just to end up with a car payment that I can't afford with the economy in the crapper! I will keep my truck that is already paid for. It just makes our trucks more rare. Parts prices for these old trucks are going to sky-rocket though. I have an idea of what can be done with the "Cash For Clunkers" idea... Shove it up the government's @$$! I refuse to be a part of this "sham".

Thats just sad that good running vehicles are getting ruined. Especially in a manner the makes the engine useless.

I'm sure in a few years finding parts for the vehicles that qualify for this sham will be harder. The local dealerships seem to be pushing this thing pretty hard to. The one that really annoys me is the kia dealership. Should be smashing kia's and replacing them with american vehicles not the other way around.-cuss

I saw a video link on Facebook of a NICE 90s Volvo being seized with sodium silicate. It made me nauseated. I think most diesel people are too caring about their vehicles and independent minded that they wouldn't participate. Who's assinine idea was this anyway?

We have a chance of saving our trucks as long as we can hold out until the government is bankrupt, which should happen by the end of Obama's first (and hopefully ONLY) term! LOL

I was just thinking last night that I should get my REPO license, throw a lift rig in the back of my F250 "Clunker", and pick up a cheap piece of commercial land with a few good security dogs here's why:

  • People are trading in cars which they did not have to make big payments on or were paid off, they get a new car with a huge loan they can't afford (Lets be real here most people cannot drop 20k+ without financing it).
  • The economy is in the toilet and there is going to be a lot of people who are still being laid off or get reductions in pay.
  • The banks are not willing to have any bad paper floating around out there right now.

The first sign that a person might not be able to pay their loan a repossession order is going out! The sad thing is now you have someone who is jobless or at least making less who cannot afford to buy a clunker, which now the minimum entry price is $4500 and cannot buy a vehicle, and cannot look for a job or continue to get to their current job.

So then what is going to happen to all the repossessed inventory?

They should take the 80's car from this program stop destroying the motors and can use the cars to build better relations with other countries by sending them there. Countries like Cuba for example could use some updated cars. The stuff their driving form the 50's could be sent back here, restored and sold as collector cars.

The vehicles from the 90's that are being sent in under this program could be saved from the lethal dose of glass as someone put it and sold to people that have a low income who need a car. They could recoup at least half the value of the car. They could call it clunkers for the poor and by doing it that way it would be recycling the car.

There has got to be a better way. The problem is, this administration want to ram everything through as fast as possible before people realize the downside of their actions. I agree, donate the good ones to the poor, have their real clunkers taken care of. Too bad I dont have all the answers. Well, gotta pour some more sodium silicate.
